🎞️ A love story nearly erased. A voice that brings it back to life. 🖤

The ISFFM continues its celebration of cinema history and live performance with a special screening of The Scent of Pheasant’s Eye: An Episode from the Tales of Flowers 🎥 — a rare 1930s Japanese silent film based on the work of Yoshiya Nobuko, one of Japan’s earliest openly q***r women writers and a trailblazer of shōjo and yuri literature 🌸🖋️

Told in true silent film tradition through the voice of a benshi 🎙️, Nanako Yamauchi brings this nearly forgotten gem back to life — paired with a live original score by an all-female ensemble: Mariah Reodica, Teresa Barrozo, and Pat Sarabia 🎶✨

🎁 Attend and get a chance to take home exclusive Japan Foundation Manila merch:
• JFF & JF Tote Bags
• SUKI: The Official Magazine of JFM
• JFF Postcards
• Japanese Film Festival Theater Fans

First come, first served. One item per person while supplies last.

This isn’t just a screening. It’s a reclamation. A revival. A tribute to q***r storytelling and women’s voices — past and present. 💖

"Okay. Bye. Love you!" - Elio

Elio is not a perfect film. Its world-building feels thin, and it never really digs into the bigger questions it sets up. But even with its missteps, there’s something sincere and meaningful underneath. It’s a quiet story that, at its best, reminds us that being true to who you are is how you find where you truly belong. 💙

🎬 Jurassic World: Rebirth (2025) 🦖🦕

Jurassic World: Rebirth doesn’t reinvent the franchise, but it does breathe new life into it with just enough charm, chaos, and nostalgia to make the ride worthwhile. It stumbles in places, especially with character depth and pacing, but when it leans into the wonder, the adventure, and the sheer spectacle of dinosaurs back on the big screen, it delivers exactly what it promises. This isn’t the perfect return, but it’s a promising one. Entertaining, emotionally sincere in the right places, and clearly made by people who still believe in the magic of this world. If future installments build on this foundation with more focused storytelling, then the next era of Jurassic could be something truly special.

The International Silent Film Festival Manila (ISFFM) is set to light up Shangri-La Plaza’s Red Carpet Cinemas on July 11–13, 2025, with a dynamic showcase that brings together silent cinema classics and the pulse of live Filipino music. 🎬🎶

Now firmly re-established after years of disruptions, ISFFM continues to stand out for blending film heritage with contemporary sound, creating a space where cultures meet and new artistic conversations take shape.

This year’s festival visual pays tribute to Dalagang Bukid (1917), the first known Filipino-produced silent film, with a still image courtesy of the Mowelfund Library & AV Archive. It also honors Atang Dela Rama, the original star of the film and the Philippines’ first National Artist for Theater, a nod to the country's rich cinematic origins.

Swipe through this post to check out the full film lineup and live scoring artists for this year’s edition. Whether you're a silent film fan or just curious about a one-of-a-kind cultural experience, there's something here worth discovering.

Brought to life through the collaboration of the Embassy of Austria, Instituto Cervantes, Japan Foundation Manila, Goethe-Institut Philippinen, and the Philippine Italian Association, together with some of the country’s most exciting musicians and artists.

FREE ADMISSION! 🎟 Pre-registration opens soon, and walk-ins are welcome. Follow for ticket updates, special features, and more festival highlights.

🎬 Only We Know (2025) 🍷🐈

doesn’t try to impress or over-explain. It simply allows you to sit with two people at a quiet point in their lives, and in doing so, says something honest about time, grief, and human connection. The storytelling is patient, the emotions are real, and the characters are allowed to exist without being forced into something bigger than themselves. It’s a film that stays with you not because it demands anything, but because it feels like something true. This stands as one of the most quietly affecting entries in Irene Emma Villamor's growing collection of intimate, emotionally grounded films. ❤️

🎬 Dangerous Animals (2025) 🦈🛥

This movie doesn’t scream for attention. It doesn’t rely on overdone jump scares or cheap effects. Instead, it keeps its focus tight, on the dynamic between predator and prey, on isolation, on survival. One of the more thoughtful choices the film makes is how it treats the sharks not as villains, but as part of the environment. They’re dangerous, but not evil, and the movie doesn’t add to the usual stigma. That space allows the real horror to shift toward something more human. It’s sharp, suspenseful, and steady in its tension, a lean thriller that respects your attention. 💯

🎬 How to Train Your Dragon (2025) 🐉🛡

holds onto the emotional core that made the original unforgettable. The key moments still land. The world still feels worth believing in. And while the animated version remains a modern classic, this adaptation doesn’t try to replace it. Instead, it honors it with care and intention. Even for those who haven’t seen the original, this film stands strong on its own, offering a cinematic experience filled with wonder, emotion, and meaning. It brings a beloved story into a new format without losing its soul. It is the kind of remake that respects its roots, brings back the right people, and knows exactly where the heart of its story lives. It reminds us why we fell in love with dragons in the first place. ✨
