127 Years of Kalayaan: A Legacy of Courage, A Future of Hope 🇵🇭

On this day, we honor the blood, sweat, and sacrifice of countless Filipinos who dreamed of a free nation, those who held the torch of bravery against colonizers, and those who dared to imagine a Philippines governed by its own people. Their courage carved the path to the freedom we enjoy today.

But Independence is not just a moment in history—it is a continuous fight. A fight to protect the truth. A battle for justice. A fight to make sure that the voices of every Filipino are heard and remembered.

As communicators, storytellers, and citizens, it is our responsibility to preserve this freedom, not just by remembering the past but by using our voices to shape a future that honors the dignity, culture, and identity of every Filipino.

Let us carry this pride in our hearts, and let us not forget:
Kalayaan was hard-earned. Let us not take it for granted.
Mabuhay ang ating kasaysayan. Mabuhay ang kabataan. Mabuhay ang Pilipinas! 🇵🇭

"The Filipino people, by nature and history, are lovers of freedom."
— Teodoro A. Agoncillo, History of the Filipino People

Fate of Senior High School Program Now in Congress’ Hands, Says Education Secretary Angara

Education Secretary Sonny Angara on Friday said the decision on whether to retain or abolish the Senior High School (SHS) program lies with Congress, amid a new legislative proposal seeking to overhaul the basic education system by removing SHS altogether.

Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada recently filed Senate Bill No. 3001, citing that SHS has yet to deliver on its goal of producing job-ready and skilled graduates, more than a decade after the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 was signed into law. The bill proposes restructuring the education system into one year of kindergarten, six years of elementary school, and four years of high school.

Angara, a former senator and now head of the Department of Education (DepEd), acknowledged the issues surrounding SHS implementation over the past ten years, describing it as overly rigid with too many subjects. However, he noted that reforms are underway through a revised SHS curriculum to be piloted in 841 schools for School Year 2025–2026.

“Hindi maganda ang naging implementation nitong nakaraang dekada. Masyadong marami ang subjects at nakahon masyado ang mga bata. Hindi sila nakakapili ng subject/s,” Angara said.

The pilot program aims to introduce more flexibility and relevance in SHS subjects, based on a thorough review involving education stakeholders. Depending on the results, DepEd may roll out the revised curriculum nationwide by the 2026–2027 school year.

Meanwhile, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, chair of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, stressed that the K to 12 program should fulfill its promise to shorten college education. He called on the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Department of Education (DepEd) to streamline curricula to prevent subject overlap and reduce the time required for college completion.

The upcoming academic year is scheduled to begin on June 16, 2025, and conclude on March 31, 2026, reverting to the pre-pandemic school calendar.

ICC Slams U.S. Sanctions on Judges Probing War Crimes, Including Duterte Case Official

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has strongly condemned the recent sanctions imposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration against four of its judges, one of whom is part of the panel handling the case against former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

In a statement released on June 5, the ICC emphasized that targeting individuals who work for international accountability undermines justice and emboldens those who believe they are above the law. "It only emboldens those who believe they can act with impunity," the Court noted, reaffirming its commitment to serve victims of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and other grave offenses.

The U.S. sanctions were issued following the ICC’s issuance of an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the opening of a probe into alleged war crimes involving U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

Judges named in the sanctions include Solomy Balungi Bossa (Uganda), Luz del Carmen Ibanez Carranza (Peru), Beti Hohler (Slovenia), and Reine Adelaide Sophie Alapini Gansou (Benin). Alapini Gansou is directly involved in the ongoing investigation into Duterte’s controversial anti-drug campaign, which allegedly led to thousands of extrajudicial killings.

According to official Philippine government data, at least 6,200 individuals were killed in anti-drug operations during Duterte’s term. However, human rights groups estimate the actual number could reach up to 30,000 due to unreported cases and vigilante-style killings.

The ICC clarified that the sanctions do not only target its personnel but also seek to intimidate supporters, including citizens and corporations from member states. The Court described the move as an assault on the global fight for justice, peace, and the rule of law.

Despite the pressure, the ICC stated it remains steadfast in its mission. The confirmation of charges hearing for Duterte is scheduled for September 23, 2025. The former Philippine president is currently detained at the ICC detention center in The Hague, Netherlands.
