‘MAS MATAAS ANG POSISYON MO, MAS ACCOUNTABLE KA’

Sen. Risa Hontiveros called for stricter restrictions on the use of confidential and intelligence funds, saying government officials entrusted with larger discretionary funds should be subject to greater accountability.

“Dumadami kaming mga senador dito na naniniwala na dapat mas i-restrict talaga ang confidential and intelligence funds… Mas mataas ang posisyon, mas malaki ang fund, mas accountable,” Hontiveros said.

Hontiveros made the remarks while discussing lessons from the ongoing impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, where the use of confidential funds has been a key issue.

The senator said the controversy should prompt Congress to look beyond the Office of the Vice President and review how confidential and intelligence funds are allocated, used and audited across government agencies.

Senator Jinggoy Estrada left Cardinal Santos Medical Center at around 4:25 p.m. Wednesday, more than an hour after the 3 p.m. end of the furlough granted to him by the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division.

Estrada had been allowed to leave detention from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to attend to medical concerns.

When asked to rate the pain he was experiencing on a scale of 1 to 10, Estrada gave a rating of 9.5.

Hindi pinalampas ni Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan ang kumakalat na meme na ikinumpara ang dating pagtutol ng oposisyon sa mga Marcos sa pakikipagtulungan ngayon ng ilang opposition figures sa administrasyon ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Direktang sinagot ni Pangilinan ang isang netizen at nilinaw na ang pakikipagtulungan niya sa administrasyon sa usapin ng agrikultura at food security ay hindi nangangahulugang nananahimik na siya sa mga isyu ng korapsyon.

“Hindi ibig sabihin na dahil nakikipagtulungan ako sa gobyerno ni Marcos Jr. sa usapin ng agri at food security ay tahimik na at pro corruption na ako,” ani Pangilinan.

Giit pa niya:

“Pro food security ako.”

Hinimok din ng senador ang kanyang mga kritiko na sa halip na manira, makipagtulungan na lamang upang makatulong sa pagpapababa ng presyo ng pagkain.

‘PROVE THE IMPEACHABLE OFFENSE WITH EVIDENCE’ — VP SARA CHALLENGES PROSECUTION

Vice President Sara Duterte challenged prosecutors and members of Congress to substantiate the impeachment case against her with evidence, rather than what she described as insults, speculation and political theatrics.

In a statement on August 26, Duterte said those seeking to advance the impeachment complaints should demonstrate the strength of their case instead of attempting to find evidence during the trial.

“Prosecutors and members of Congress who want to legitimize the two impeachment complaints-filed without a shred of evidence-should be confident in the strength of the case. They should not be fishing for evidence during the trial or desperately try to turn something they wish to be true into a wild story of alleged wrongdoing.”

Duterte also criticized remarks made by some participants in the proceedings, arguing that personal attacks do not establish an impeachable offense.

“A strong case does not need the adornment of theatrics. A Senator calling a witness ‘stupid,’ a lawyer calling me the ‘mastermind of a scam’ or another witness referring to me as a ‘brat,’ does not prove a case, nor does it produce evidence. Insults reveal the need to feign confidence in the face of a weak presentation,” she said.
