Why Asphalt is Black and Hot
Asphalt is a material people use to make roads. It is made from a sticky, black stuff called bitumen. That’s why asphalt is black.
When the sun shines on asphalt, the black color soaks up the sunlight like a sponge soaking up water.
All the sunlight that the asphalt absorbs turns into heat, so it gets really hot! That’s why when workers are working on the road, it feels super hot under their feet and hands.
💡 Fun Tip: Lighter colors don’t soak up as much sunlight, so they stay cooler. That’s why sometimes playgrounds or sidewalks are light-colored to keep them from getting too hot.
