The holy month of Ramadhan, along with its blessed days and its worship-filled nights, has passed. It has been the talk of our pulpits, the glow of our minarets, the subject of our conversations and gatherings, and the life of our masjids. Even though it left mixed feelings of happiness and sadness, it also promised profound peace, renewal, and a deeper connection with Allah. May we all continue to be the bearers of light, instruments of growth, fountains of kindness, and reflections of goodness to everyone.

As we continue to experience the overflowing blessings of the holy month, may we pause and ask ourselves, what happens after Ramadhan? What becomes of us and what should we do after the month of mercy, forgiveness, repentance, diligence, perseverance, spiritual effort, divine pleasure, closeness, tears of love, hope, and humility in the presence of Allah, the Lord of the heavens and the earth? What teachings of the Qur'an can we religiously apply in our lives?
The answers to these questions have been revealed over the centuries through divine revelation to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and to those who sought guidance. If Allah granted you the tree of faith, it is your responsibility to remain steadfast beneath its shade, to hold firmly onto the path and to not stray from it. Steadfastness is the cure, as Allah says in the Qur'an: 'Indeed, those who say "Our Lord is Allah' and then remain steadfast..."} (Al-Fussilat: 30).
Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "They remained steadfast in action as they were in speech." Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) also said: "They did not behave like the sly foxes."

Steadfastness is the solution and the path. However, it is not achieved through wishful thinking; it requires specific conditions and causes, including:

We must recognize that it is Allah who enabled us to worship Him during Ramadhan, and it is He alone who can help us continue on the path. Steadfastness is not from our strength or ability nor from our youthful vigor, but purely a gift from Allah who grants His servants success in obedience and accepts their deeds. Acknowledging this is the beginning of steadfastness. On the other hand, someone who believes their worship is due to their own strength will be left to their own devices, and those whom Allah leaves to themselves will perish. This is why Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Do not leave me (O Allah) to myself even for the blink of an eye." (Abu Dawood)

Steadfastness is not attained by lying in bed or indulging in pleasures and desires. It comes through struggle, perseverance, and endurance. We must strive against our own desires, our ego, and the devil and persist in doing the commanded actions, increasing our acts of worship, and resisting the desires and prohibitions. Allah says: "And those who strive for UsโWe will surely guide them to Our ways, and indeed, Allah is with the doers of good."} (Al-Ankabut: 69)
Imam Ahmad was asked: "When does a person find rest?" He replied, "When he places his foot in Paradise." Imam ash-Shaafi'i said: "A person of dignity should never find rest in this world, for he is in hardship until he meets Allah." Allah does not grant steadfastness or the taste of its rewards unless one perseveres in it, work for it, call others to it, and strive to reach it.

This is one of the greatest aids to steadfastness and one of the most powerful reasons for remaining firm. Ja'far ibn Muhammad said: "Whenever I faced a moment of weakness, I would look at the face of Muhammad ibn Wasi' and be motivated to act for a week." It is easier to worship when surrounded by others who worship, and it is difficult to do so in isolation and heedlessness. As the proverb says: "The wolf preys on the stray sheep."

One of the signs of the acceptance of worship is the continuation of worship after it. We must persist in worship and maintain our commitment to acts of devotion. Let the last act of reciting the Qur'an not be the completion of Ramadhan and the last night of worship not be the final night of the month. Even though Ramadhan has passed, fasting, prayer, recitation of the Qur'an, and acts of worship continue. Any act of worship offered to Allah every day of our lives and not only during Ramadhan is pleasing in His eyes. Brethren, let us worship Him till the end of our days.

Our religion teaches us that worship does not cease with the end of its seasons. As soon as one season ends, another begins. After the last night of Ramadhan, the signs of the Hajj season begin, and the month of Shawwal starts. The Prophet (peace be upon him) recommended fasting six days in Shawwal, saying: "Whoever fasts during the month of Ramadan and then follows it with six days of Shawwal will be (rewarded) as if he had fasted the entire year."
