UNRAVELING THE TRINITY TRIANGLE
I was discussing the subject of one God with a Trinitarian friend of mine. I explained to him that there is only one eternal Spirit of God. I told him that the eternal Spirit of God was manifest in the flesh for the purpose of providing the ultimate sacrifice for sin. I explained that this manifestation — or personification — was the Son of God, Jesus Christ.
Since the beginning, God required a blood sacrifice for the atonement of sins. Throughout the Old Testament, God promised to be our Redeemer. I reminded him God is Holy and God is a Spirit, thus making God a Holy Spirit. I concluded Jesus is not a separate “person” from God the Father, but is indeed the REVELATION of God the Father in human flesh. I further concluded the Holy Spirit is also not a separate “person” from the God the Father, but is indeed the self-same Spirit of the Father.
It was at this point that my friend brought out “The Trinity Triangle” to explain to me how God exists in three separate and distinct persons, yet remains one God. With respect to all Christians, I offer the following observation about the triangle:
First, the simple fact that one would need a triangle to explain ONE GOD should be the first light of caution that something is not right. Not once in scripture did the Jewish people hear about three persons in heaven, nor did they teach the concept of a triune-God to their children.
Deuteronomy 6: 4 – 7 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: 5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. 6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
Second, If the Trinity has been present since the beginning of time, why didn’t God introduce this doctrine to His own people in the Old Testament? Why didn’t He tell them “God is one LORD in three persons?” Was there any reason to hide “God the Holy Spirit” or “God the Son” from them?
Third, the prefix, "Tri," has always represented three separate entities. Examples: tricycle (3 tires), trilogy (3 movies), triune (3 members, aspects, or parts), and trifecta (3 wins or events).
The doctrine of the Trinity does not deny this fact either, as it claims three separate and distinct persons; each with their own intellect, will, role, and personality. If each person in the Trinity can be prayed to, and each person in the Trinity has His own will and intellect, how exactly does that not equal three gods?
Fourth, let's break down the first three claims of the Trinity Triangle:
The Father is God.
The Son is God.
The Holy Spirit is God.
Why can’t we just simplify this by explaining that God is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit?
The one and only eternal Spirit of God was manifest in the flesh at Bethlehem in the body of Jesus Christ. His eternal Spirit continues to dwell with us as our comforter and ever present help in time of need.
Fifth, let's look at the next three claims:
"The Father is not the Son."
There is only one God and Father of all (Malachi 2:10). This one God and Father of all was manifest in the flesh (1 Timothy 3:16). The flesh referred to was Jesus. Jesus was Immanuel - GOD WITH US. (Matthew 1:23) When you've seen Jesus, you've seen the Father (John 14:7-9).
Here's the bottom line: The Father is not the Son, but the Son is the personification of the Father. Jesus is God the Father manifest in the flesh. He is not "God the Son," or a second member of a triune God.
"The Son is not the Spirit."
Jesus promised to be with us always (Matthew 28:18).
How can Jesus abide in us unless He is abiding in Spirit?
How did Jesus walk through walls unless He is Spirit?
How did Jesus claim He would not leave us comfortless, but would come to us … unless He is Spirit? (John 14:18)
And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth THE SPIRIT OF HIS SON into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
Galatians 4: 6
For as many as are led by THE SPIRIT OF GOD, they are the sons of God. 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bo***ge again to fear; but ye have received THE SPIRIT of adoption, WHEREBY WE CRY, ABBA, FATHER. 16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: Romans 8: 14 - 16
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the SPIRIT OF GOD dwell in you. Now if any man have not the SPIRIT OF CHRIST, he is none of his. 10 And if CHRIST BE IN YOU, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. Romans 8: 9, 10
Now THE LORD IS THAT SPIRIT: and where the SPIRIT OF THE LORD is, there is liberty.
2 Corinthians 3: 17
To not believe Jesus is the Holy Spirit is to believe there is more than one Spirit living inside of you. That is not consistent with scripture. (See my Bible Study, "If I Had One Hour To Tell You About One God.")
But all these worketh that ONE AND SELFSAME SPIRIT, dividing to every man severally as he will. 12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. 13 For by ONE SPIRIT are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into ONE SPIRIT.
1 Corinthians 12: 11 - 13
"The Spirit is not the Father."
How can the Holy Spirit not be the Father when the Bible clearly says it was the HOLY SPIRIT that overshadowed Mary to conceive Jesus Christ?
(Luke 1:35)
Did Mary have two Fathers, or is the "Holy Spirit" another term for God the Father?
Remember:
God is Holy (1 Peter 1: 16), and God is a Spirit. (John 4:24)
The Bible clearly tells us there is only ONE SPIRIT, only ONE GOD, and only ONE FATHER.
How can the Spirit not be the Father?
Do you really believe there are two eternal Spirits in Heaven? And that BOTH Spirits fill heaven and earth?
When David cried, "take not thy Holy Spirit from me," (Psalm 51: 11) Do you honestly believe David was referring to a third person in the Godhead? Keep in mind David was never taught that God was three persons. Jewish people only knew God as one Divine being and eternal Spirit. David was speaking to the one and only God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
When “the Spirit of God” moved upon the face of the waters in the creation account in Genesis, do you believe it was the “third person” who was creating the world? Again, this is not consistent with the scriptures.
Finally, well known Trinitarian minister, Charles Swindol, has been quoted as saying, "Jesus is the only member of the Godhead that you will ever see."
I find that extremely interesting, because he is admitting Jesus is the only visible manifestation of God. This is exactly what oneness believers teach, only we do not claim there are two other invisible members of a triune Godhead.
The bottom line is this: You do not need a three cornered triangle to explain God. Ironically, you simply need to remember these three basic biblical truths:
1. There is only one God and Father of all. (Malachi 2: 10)
2. God was manifest in the flesh. (1Timothy 3: 16; John 1: 14)
3. Jesus is God.
(John 1: 1, 10; Matthew 1:23)
I conclude with just a sampling of Old Testament to New Testament comparisons which clearly indicate there is no separation between God and Jesus. The only difference is that Jesus became the visible image of God and thus revealed His Oneness with the Father.
Isaiah 43: 10 Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and UNDERSTAND THAT I AM HE: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.
John 8: 24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I AM HE, ye shall die in your sins.
Isaiah 43: 11 I, even I, am the LORD; and BESIDE ME THERE IS NO SAVIOUR.
Luke 2: 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David A SAVIOUR, which is Christ the Lord.
Isaiah 43: 25 I, even I, AM HE THAT BLOTTETH OUT THY TRANSGRESSIONS for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.
Mark 2: 5 – 7 When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, THY SINS BE FORGIVEN THEE. 6 But there was certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, 7 Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins BUT GOD ONLY?
Isaiah 45: 12 I HAVE MADE THE EARTH, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.
John 1: 10 He was in the world, and THE WORLD WAS MADE BY HIM, and the world knew him not.
Exodus 3: 14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
John 8: 58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I AM.
Isaiah 45: 23 I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That UNTO ME every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.
Philippians 2: 10, 11 That AT THE NAME OF JESUS every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
