In celebration of Sanitary Engineering Day and Environment Month, the Philippine Society of Sanitary Engineers โ Colegio de Muntinlupa Student Chapter (PSSE-CDMSC) took part in the 2025 International Coastal Clean Up, last September 20, 2025, Saturday at the Central Park, SM MOA by the Bay. The event saw the participation of over 48,800 volunteers nationwide, including students, civic groups, private organizations, and local communities.
The PSSE-CDMSC spearheaded the initiative in partnership with SM Cares, Department of Environment and Natural Resources - National Capital Region (DENR-NCR), and International Coastal Cleanup Philippines. With the theme,
โ๐๐ญ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฏ ๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ด ๐๐จ๐ข๐ช๐ฏ๐ด๐ต ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ญ๐ช๐ฎ๐ข๐ต๐ฆ ๐๐ณ๐ช๐ด๐ช๐ด: ๐๐ข๐บ๐ฐ ๐ข๐ฏ๐จ ๐๐ฐ๐ญ๐ถ๐ด๐บ๐ฐ๐ฏ,โ which emphasizes the role of individuals in tackling marine pollution.
A total of 40 students from Colegio de Muntinlupa joined the clean-up drive, with participants from various engineering programs: 31 students coming from Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Sanitary Engineering, 4 students from Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, 1 student from Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, and 4 students from Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering. The event was also documented by CDM Inkolegio, the official student publication, along with coverage from CDM Radyo Colegio and support from the CDM Emergency Response Team.
Apart from the clean-up at SM MOA By the Bay, simultaneous activities were conducted across various designated coastal and river sites in Metro Manila, such as Las PiรฑasโParaรฑaque Wetland Park (LPPWP), Tanza Marine Tree Park, BASECO Lagoon, Manila Baywalk Dolomite Beach, Coastal Area of Brgy. Bagumbayan North in Navotas, Portion of Manila Bay behind ASEANA and Solaire, Paraรฑaque City, Tullahan River along Brgy. San Bartolome, Quezon City, and Pasig River along Brgy. 836, Pandacan, Manila.
Through collective effort, CDM Volunteers successfully accumulated a total of 115.7 kilograms of waste. This includes 24 kg of plastic items, 15 kg of aluminum cans, 9 kg of clothes and fabrics, 21.3 kg of wood debris, 13 kg of tires and tire parts, and 33.4 kg of other waste materials such as fishing nets, e-cigarettes, lighters, metals, diapers, and facemasks. Each piece of trash collected represents not only a step toward cleaner coastlines but also a meaningful contribution to the global fight against marine pollution through small efforts like this.
The successful participation of PSSE-CDMSC in this year's coastal clean-up serves as a reminder that every effort we make contributes to a larger good in safeguarding our environment. As the theme suggests, "๐๐ข๐บ๐ฐ ๐ข๐ฏ๐จ ๐๐ฐ๐ญ๐ถ๐ด๐บ๐ฐ๐ฏ," the activity emphasized the vital role of young people in protecting marine ecosystems and promoting sustainable practices. Through initiatives like this, the youth continue to demonstrate their commitment to environmental responsibility and contribute to the long-term goal of a cleaner and healthier planet.
The successful involvement of PSSE-CDMSC was made possible with the support of Colegio de Muntinlupa and the local government, which provided transportation and logistical support to ensure the students' active participation in the clean-up.
