What student life is there after summer class?
This summer class, which allowed a few students to spend their progressive classes in air-conditioned rooms with relaxing cushion seats and a spacious deskโenough for a student to rest during breaks while they feel the cool air brushing through their skinโenhancing their comfort.
But what comes after this summer class? Back to when students had to spend their whole academic year navigating their discussions under the trees?

While having a rest, my head was on my forearm, placed on the desk, listening to my classmates joking around. One of them laughingly said, โ๐ฅ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ช๐ข๐๐ฃ ๐๐ฃ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐จ๐ช๐ข๐ข๐๐ง ๐๐ก๐๐จ๐จ, ๐ช๐ฃ๐๐๐ง ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐ฉ๐ง๐๐๐จ ๐ฃ๐๐ฅ๐ค๐ ๐ฉ๐ ๐ข๐๐๐ ๐ก๐๐จ๐,โ to which most laughed, including me. Instead of hearing a complaint, there was laughterโa laughter of adaptation, an adaptation to our dearest institutionโs learning environment.
You can put students in an open area as they go through their discussions, and there would still be learning as long as there is a quality education.
Under the trees? ๐๐ฉโ๐จ ๐ง๐๐๐ง๐๐จ๐๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐๐ฎ,โ most students would say. Is it actually genuine, or just copium? Maybe it really is refreshingโthe kind of tranquility only Mother Nature can provide, making us believe it is conducive enough for learning. But is it really sustainable? At what cost?
Any learning environment can be conducive, until the distractions start to creep inโthose that can hinder the learning and teaching progress.

I love our institution. The sense of security it provides us when it comes to embracing cultural diversity and self-expression is something that makes me feel safer than ever. However, the learning environment in the open areas on our campus has not been free from distractions.
Itโs not just about whether we learn in a classroom or outdoors, but itโs also about how we manage ourselves and how our institution should enforce instructions in our shared spaces. Distractions in public spaces are inevitable, but loud music, speakers, and rowdy noises are controllable and manageable.
Given that our institution is still in the process of providing us with the classrooms we all need, the least we, as students, could do is consider our learning environmentโbeing mindful of those who are navigating their lectures in the open area.
At the same time, our institution should consider enforcing even a simple policy to reduce unnecessary distractions and make the open areas more conducive to learning, serving as alternative spacesโwhether itโs at the bandstand, the function house, or under the trees.
These public spaces are designed for celebrations, events, and even for a lightening-the-tension break after classes. However, we share it. While your group may be having fun during an activity, another group might be having an exam, a long quiz, or engaged in serious discussion.
We all share this institution, these spaces, and we all share the responsibility of making it a place where learning can thrive.
