St. Januarius, the bishop of Benevento, is revered for his strong faith and martyrdom during the persecution under Emperor Diocletian. Born in Italy, he showed great courage by visiting deacons and laypeople who were imprisoned, an act that led to his own imprisonment.

Despite facing wild beasts, St. Januarius emerged unharmed, but he and his fellow believers were ultimately executed by beheading.

A remarkable part of his legacy is the relic of his blood, which is kept in Naples. This relic is known for its miraculous behavior, as the blood liquefies and bubbles when displayed in the cathedral, a phenomenon that continues to intrigue scientists.

St. Januarius's unwavering commitment to his faith has earned him lasting honor in the Church. His martyrdom is believed to have taken place around 305 A.D. The Church celebrates his life and sacrifice every year on his feast day, September 19th.

St. Joseph of Cupertino was born in 1603 in Cupertino, Italy. Known for his simple and innocent nature, he faced many struggles, including rejection and hardships. His strong devotion to God and the Virgin Mary led him to join the Franciscan Friars Minor Conventual and eventually become a priest.

Despite having learning difficulties and a short temper, Joseph became a humble and gentle servant, showing the Holy Spirit's power. His deep faith brought about incredible miracles, such as levitating during Mass, which made him famous.

He also endured severe trials and temptations. His life, full of spiritual ecstasies and a deep bond with God, inspires many believers. Today, he is the patron saint of air travelers, pilots, and those with learning disabilities.

St. Joseph of Cupertino died on September 18, 1663, and was declared a saint by Pope Clement XIII in 1767. His prayer reflects his humble heart, asking for God's help and promising a life of prayer and devotion.

St. Robert Bellarmine was born on October 4, 1542, in Montepulciano, Italy. A key leader in the Catholic Church, he was known for his unwavering dedication. As the third of ten children, his mother's strong faith deeply influenced him.

In 1560, he joined the Society of Jesus and was later ordained a priest. Bellarmine became well-known for his Latin sermons while teaching in Louvain. In 1576, he earned the esteemed position of controversial theology chair at the Roman College and became its Rector in 1592. His career advanced as he served as the Provincial of Naples and was appointed Cardinal in 1598.

Bellarmine was a passionate defender of the Church, especially against anti-clerical groups in Venice and the political ideas of England's King James I. He wrote extensively on various topics, addressing heresies and advocating for church-state relationships that align with democratic principles today. He emphasized that while authority is divine, it is given to leaders by the people.

He also served as a spiritual mentor to St. Aloysius Gonzaga, supported St. Francis de Sales in establishing the Visitation Order, and showed fair judgment in Galileo's case. St. Robert Bellarmine left behind a rich legacy with his writings on spirituality, education, and theological debates. He passed away in 1621, leaving a lasting mark on the history of the Church.

St. Cornelius, honored on September 16th, was a Roman priest who became pope following a delay caused by the Decius persecution of Christians.

His time as pope was notable for discussions about how to treat Christians who had abandoned their faith during these tough times. Cornelius stood firmly with St. Cyprian against Novatus and Felicissimus, who believed the Church should not forgive those who had faltered in their faith.

Cornelius opposed both those who were too lenient and those who were too strict. He maintained that the Church had the right to forgive and welcome back Christians who genuinely repented after committing to penance.

This view was supported by a council of Western bishops in Rome in 251, which rejected Novatian's teachings and excommunicated him and his followers.

Unfortunately, in 253, renewed persecutions forced Cornelius into exile at Centum Cellae, where he ultimately became a martyr. His leadership and dedication highlight the Church's commitment to mercy and inclusion for those seeking to return to the faith.

St. Valerian was a dedicated Christian martyr from the 2nd century, honored for his unwavering faith and ultimate sacrifice during the persecutions under Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius.

Around 177 AD, Christians in Lyons, including St. Valerian and their bishop, St. Pothinus, faced severe trials and harsh treatment.

During this difficult time, St. Marcellus, a priest, narrowly escaped ex*****on and even managed to convert his pagan host to Christianity. Together, St. Marcellus and St. Valerian fled from prison.

Valerian boldly declared his Christian faith, which led to his capture and eventual ex*****on. Refusing to renounce his beliefs, he was beheaded in Tournus, near Autun, demonstrating his steadfast commitment.

The Roman Martyrology commemorates St. Valerian on September 15th, celebrating his courage and the significant price he paid as a witness to his faith. His story exemplifies the resilient spirit of Christian martyrs who have stood firm against persecution throughout the centuries.

September 15| Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows

The devotion to Our Sorrowful Mother became widely popular, especially around the Mediterranean, towards the end of the 11th century. This devotion is closely linked to the "Stabat Mater," a hymn attributed to Jacopone da Todi (1230-1306).

The first liturgical celebrations honoring Mary at the foot of the Cross, known as Our Lady of Compassion, appeared in the 15th century. Earlier, in 1233, the Servites (Order of the Servants of the Blessed Virgin Mary) were established. They played a significant role in spreading the devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows.

In 1668, they received permission to hold a special Mass for Mary's Seven Sorrows. In 1692, Pope Innocent XII approved a Feast dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows on the third Sunday of September, although this was temporary.

Later, on August 18, 1714, the feast was moved to the Friday before Palm Sunday. Then, on September 18, 1814, Pope Pius VII made the feast part of the entire Latin Church, setting it for the third Sunday of September.

Finally, Pope Pius X in 1914 fixed the feast day on September 15, the day after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, renaming it "Our Lady of Sorrows" instead of "Seven Sorrows of Mary."

Her unwavering dedication to the needy was clear as she often shared food from the Count's kitchen with the impoverished. This act of kindness led Ottilia, the Count's wife, to dismiss her.

Afterward, Notburga served a humble farmer, continuing her charitable deeds. Following the passing of Count Henry's wife and a period of hardship, the Count reinstated Notburga to her previous position.

She committed her life to being his housekeeper, becoming well-known for her miracles and deep compassion for the less fortunate. St. Notburga's life is a shining example of selfless service and devotion to those in need.

Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

On September 13, 335, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, also known as the Church of the Resurrection, was officially dedicated. The next day, a grand ceremony honored the cross that Empress Helena had discovered on September 14, 320.

In 614, Persian King Chosroes II launched an attack against the Romans. After taking Jerusalem, he seized many treasures, including the Cross of Jesus.

Byzantine Emperor Heraclius attempted to negotiate peace, but his efforts were turned down. Determined, he went to war again and won a key battle near Nineveh, which led to the Cross being returned to Jerusalem.

Today, we focus not on the suffering associated with the Cross, but on the immense love God showed humanity by accepting death on it. As Pope Francis said, "Who, though in the form of God, emptied himself, taking the form of a servant. This is the glory of the Cross of Jesus!"
