It all started because a woman named Bertha Bigford invited Shirley Holmes to play basketball.

That simple invitation eventually led a successful Lutheran pastor — Dr. C. Raymond Holmes — through a season of anguish, study, and surrender that ended with his baptism as a Seventh-day Adventist on April 24, 1971.

"Stranger in My Home" is his raw, honest retelling of that journey. It's a story about the cost of following truth, the danger of harboring hatred, and the patience of a God who leads us — even when we're kicking and screaming.

This book sharpened my ministry. If you can find a copy, read it.

Salvation isn't a one-time event.

It's a lifestyle.

In Philippians 2:12, Paul says something that makes a lot of Christians uncomfortable:

"Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling."

Wait—isn't salvation by grace? Aren't we saved by faith alone?

Yes. But here's what Paul actually means:
The Greek word for "work out" doesn't mean earn. It means exercise—like working out at the gym. You don't go to the gym to get muscles out of thin air. You go to develop what's already there.

That's exactly what Paul is saying. Now that you've received Christ as Savior, imitate Him as Master.

In ancient times, disciples followed their rabbi for one reason: to become like him. They walked so closely behind that they'd be covered in the dust kicked up by their teacher's sandals.

That's the goal.

But here's the twist—we don't shine so that we can be seen.

We shine so that He can be seen through us.

Don't eclipse God. Let Him shine.

Whether you're in the pulpit or the pews.
CEO or employee.
Church or workplace.
The darker the night, the brighter the light.

Go. Shine.

I've been thinking about this viral "Nihilist Penguin" meme that's taken over the internet—and I believe it reveals something profound about our generation.

In 2007, filmmaker Werner Herzog captured a lone penguin walking away from its colony in Antarctica. Not toward the ocean where food is. Not back to its community. But toward the mountains—70 kilometers inland—toward certain death.

Scientists call it disorientation. A neurological glitch. Nothing philosophical.

But in 2026, this clip resurfaced and went viral. 180 million views. Countless memes. Comments like:

"That's me leaving my problems behind."
"He knows something we don't."
"A generation so burned out that a penguin walking is motivating thousands."

And that's when it hit me:

The penguin's walk isn't the phenomenon. WE are.

The fact that millions of people—exhausted, lonely, searching for meaning—saw themselves in a disoriented bird walking toward oblivion? That tells us something about the state of our world.

This generation is crying out. Not for more content. Not for more noise. But for meaning. For rest. For someone to walk WITH them.

And here's where the Gospel speaks:

Jesus walked alone. Toward the cross. Toward certain death. But unlike the penguin, He did it with purpose—so that we wouldn't have to walk alone.

No one needs to be a nihilist penguin.

You have Jesus. And you have His Church—His people—walking with you.

The world doesn't need more penguins walking into the cold.

It needs the Church to be the warmth they're looking for.

Growth is slow. Roots take time. Fruit takes seasons.

Stop comparing your chapter one to someone else's chapter twenty.

And extend that same grace to people around you. We're all growing. Just not at the same speed. And that's okay.

Why is unity in the church so hard?
Because humility is so rare.

In this week's Sabbath School lesson (Philippians 2), Paul exposes two unity-killers that are still very much alive today:

1. Eritheia — selfish ambition. The word was used in ancient Greece to describe politicians who pursued office through underhanded tactics. Paul says this attitude treats the church as a stage to perform on rather than a platform to serve from.
2. Kenodoxia — literally "empty glory." It's the delusion that makes a person think they deserve the position they're scheming for.
Sound familiar?

But Paul doesn't leave us there. He points us to two contrasting movements:
Satan: "I will ascend… I will exalt my throne…"
Result? Brought DOWN to the lowest depths.

Jesus: Though equal with God, He made Himself of no reputation—servant, cross, death.
Result? HIGHLY EXALTED above every name.

The principle is unmistakable:
"Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." — Matthew 23:12

Here's the secret to unity: If all our eyes are fixed on the Cross and all of us walk toward it—not focusing on each other's flaws—unity becomes inevitable. We'll all end up bowing together at the foot of Calvary.

It starts when we shift our focus to Christ.

Read that again.

If God... yes, God, took six days to create, why do we think we need to finish everything by tonight?

Rest isn't laziness. Pacing isn't weakness. Even creation had rhythm. So should you.

Two words. One lifestyle.

Intentional: You're not drifting. You're directing your steps toward purpose.
Missional: You're not living for yourself. You're living for God's mission.

Simple yet profound.

We chase more. More success. More recognition. More followers.

But what if enough was actually... enough?

Paul learned it: "I have learned to be content in whatever state I am."

That's not settling. That's freedom.

If you're in a dark season right now, hear this: your light isn't diminished by the darkness. It's revealed by it.

Keep shining. Especially when it feels like the night won't end.

Dawn is coming. Keep your light burning!

We're so busy we forget to breathe.

But constant motion isn't progress. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is stop.

"Be still and know that I am God." Resting is also being productive. Resting is also efficient. Be still.

It's easy to show up for the big moments—the sermon, the event, the spotlight.

But what about the quiet Tuesday? The work no one sees? The routine you do for the hundredth time?

Faithfulness isn't about the highlight reel. It's about the footage that never gets posted. God sees it. And it matters.

When someone shares their questions, don't panic. Don't preach at them. Just walk with them.

Some of the best discipleship happens on the road, not in the pulpit.

Be willing to be present in the process, not just at the conclusion.
