The Solemnity of the Annunciation celebrates the coming of the Angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary to announce to her the special mission God had chosen for her in being the mother of His only son, Jesus Christ.

We are continually reminded of the importance of this feast to our salvation in various devotional prayers. Two examples that highlight the importance of this feast are the joyous mysteries of the Rosary and the Angelus.

The feast of the began to be celebrated on this day during the fourth and fifth centuries, soon after the date for celebrating Christmas was universalized throughout the Church.

This feast celebrates the Incarnation of the Second Person of the Trinity and the salvation of all mankind. This point of our salvation was deeply discussed by many of the Church fathers, to explain it to the faithful and to show the deep love God has for us. Some of the Church fathers who wrote on this were St. Athanasius, St. Gregory of Nyssa and St. Augustine.ΒΉ

| March 26th of this year is the Fifth Sunday of Lent, and marks the final two weeks of our 40-day preparation for Easter, where images of the Saints and crosses are draped in violet and shall remain covered until the singing of the Gloria in excelsis during the Easter Vigil.

Traditionally the final two weeks of Lent in the Roman Rite are used as an immediate preparation for the sorrowful events of the Easter drama. It is a period of time to focus more and more on the Passion and death of Jesus and so accompany him on his way to Calvary.

For several centuries the Fifth Sunday of Lent was known as β€œPassion Sunday” and marked the beginning of a special sub-season called PASSIONTIDE, which extended up until Holy Saturday. During this time the Church’s liturgy becomes more somber and a sorrowful mood is reflected in the various practices that occurred in the liturgy.

Inset: The main retablo and its sacred images draped in purple for last year's Passiontide.

| Today on Ash Wednesday begins our forty-day ascent towards Easter, with the imposition of ashes ushering us into another liturgical season in the calendar of the Church β€” the penitential season of Lent.

During Lent, we seek the Lord in prayer by reading Sacred Scripture; we serve by giving alms; and we practice self-control through fasting. We are called not only to abstain from luxuries during Lent, but to a true inner conversion of heart as we seek to follow Christ's will more faithfully. We recall the waters of baptism in which we were also baptized into Christ's death, died to sin and evil, and began a new life in Christ.

The Holy Rosary Parish, Oroquieta City joins the universal church today in the observance of crossing our foreheads with ashes, reminding us of our mortality and our total dependence on God.
