đź“– Full Narrative: The Long Wait

New York, early 1981. Foreigner was already famous for loud rock hits like Cold as Ice and Urgent. But guitarist Mick Jones wanted something softer — something honest about love and longing.

Late one evening, he sat at a piano and played two simple, dreamy notes. It felt like waiting. He called Lou Gramm over, and together they shaped it into a melody about patience and hope. They brought in Thomas Dolby to add that floating synth line — the sound of time passing, of anticipation.

Gramm later said he struggled at first — until a beautiful woman walked in. Suddenly, he sang with every bit of longing he’d ever felt: years of touring, loneliness, wondering if “the one” was out there.

When released, it dominated radio. It never hit #1, but it stayed at #2 longer than any song before it — proof that listeners felt every word. Decades later, it remains the song you play when you believe: good love is worth waiting for. ❤🙏💯
