In Service of the Filipino: The Legacy of Ninoy Aquino
“I have asked myself many times: Is the Filipino worth suffering, or even dying for? Is he not a coward who would yield to any colonizer, be he foreign or homegrown? Is a Filipino more comfortable under an authoritarian leader because he does not want to be burdened with the freedom of choice? Is he unprepared, or worse, ill-suited for presidential or parliamentary democracy? I have carefully weighed the virtues and faults of the Filipino and I have come to the conclusion that he is worth dying for.”
— Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.
Every August 21, Filipinos observe Ninoy Aquino Day, a special non-working holiday that honors the life and legacy of former Senator Benigno Simeon “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. His death on August 21, 1983, became a crucial moment in Philippine history, inspiring many Filipinos to stand for democracy, freedom, and political reform.
Ninoy Aquino was a journalist, public servant, and senator known for his strong advocacy for democratic governance, social justice, and active citizen participation in public life. As a prominent critic of the Marcos administration, his political activities eventually led to his imprisonment during the period of Martial Law.
After several years in exile abroad, Aquino decided to return to the Philippines despite the risks to his safety. On August 21, 1983, shortly after arriving at the Manila International Airport, he was assassinated.
His assassination became a turning point in Philippine history, inspiring many Filipinos to speak out for democracy and freedom. It also contributed to the political changes that culminated in the 1986 People Power Revolution.
Beyond the circumstances of his death, Ninoy Aquino’s legacy continues to influence discussions about democracy, freedom, and the future of the Philippines. His courage and commitment to democratic principles reflected his belief in the importance of freedom, responsible leadership, and the active participation of Filipinos in shaping their country.
As the nation commemorates Ninoy Aquino Day, Filipinos are given an opportunity to reflect on his role in shaping the country’s political history and to examine the ideals he championed. His life and legacy remain an important part of the continuing story of Philippine democracy and the enduring pursuit of freedom, justice, and responsible governance.
