ASEZ WAO Conducts “Blue Ocean” Project at White Beach, Barangay White Beach, Pagadian City, Philippines
Approximately 250 Volunteers and Citizens Collect 2,000 Kilograms of Waste
On May 31, ASEZ WAO, an international volunteer organization, carried out its “Blue Ocean” project at White Beach in Barangay White Beach, Pagadian City, Philippines, as part of its efforts to protect marine ecosystems. ASEZ WAO is the young adult worker volunteer group of the World Mission Society Church of God (General Pastor Kim Joo-cheol, hereinafter referred to as the Church of God).
The Blue Ocean Project is an environmental initiative dedicated to protecting marine ecosystems by cleaning rivers, streams, beaches, and coastal areas. The project is actively conducted around the world, including in the United States, the United Kingdom, Peru, South Korea, Australia, and South Africa.
An ASEZ WAO representative stated, “The ocean is a treasure trove of life, and protecting marine ecosystems is essential for ensuring a sustainable environment for future generations. With this in mind, young volunteers came together to create a cleaner and healthier world for humanity.”
ASEZ WAO, composed of young working adults from the Church of God, carries out a wide range of volunteer activities worldwide to promote environmental sustainability and community development.
This project brought together ASEZ WAO members, local residents, and representatives from various government agencies, including the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the Philippine Army, and the Philippine National Police (PNP). Through cooperation between the public and private sectors, approximately 250 participants joined the cleanup effort, raising awareness of marine environmental protection and demonstrating a shared commitment to building a cleaner community.
Despite heavy rainfall throughout the day, participants remained dedicated and continued the volunteer activity without interruption. Volunteers cleaned the White Beach area, collecting various types of marine debris and household waste, including plastic bottles, plastic bags, cans, Styrofoam, and discarded wood materials.
As a result, approximately 2,000 kilograms of waste were collected, equivalent to around 80 sacks based on 25-kilogram rice bags. Working together in the rain, participants removed litter scattered throughout the beach and made a significant contribution to improving the local marine environment.
Officials present at the event expressed their appreciation for the ASEZ WAO members’ voluntary spirit of service and strong commitment to environmental protection. They also expressed hope that similar initiatives would continue to support the sustainable development of the local community.
One local resident who participated in the event remarked, “The weather made the cleanup challenging, but it was truly meaningful to see so many people come together to make the beach cleaner. I hope to continue participating in activities that help protect the natural environment of our community.”
Over the years, ASEZ WAO has conducted Blue Ocean projects throughout the Philippines, including at Manila Bay, Sucat River, the Marikina River area, and the Las Piñas–Parañaque Wetland Park in Metro Manila, as well as in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte; Davao City, Davao del Sur; and General Santos City, South Cotabato.
In addition to the Blue Ocean Project, ASEZ WAO has carried out various environmental campaigns, including the “Green Earth” project for protecting terrestrial ecosystems, the “2040 Plastic-Free” campaign and “No More GPGP” project to reduce plastic pollution, and the “Mother’s Forest” project, which addresses climate change through tree planting. The organization also supports education, social welfare, and cultural exchange programs that foster communication and harmony among families and communities. In recognition of its dedicated volunteer efforts, ASEZ WAO has received nearly 200 awards and commendations from organizations such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (NVSCA), the Governor of Leyte, and the Mayor of Baguio.
