Students of the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (CAFF) at Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) Pamplona Extension are reminded to stay alert following the continued increase in conjunctivitis, commonly known as sore eyes, in Negros Oriental.

According to the Philippine News Agency (PNA), the Provincial Health Office recorded 7,978 conjunctivitis cases in the province as of August 7, 2026. The rising number of cases has prompted health authorities to remind the public to observe proper hygiene and take precautions against the spread of infection.

Conjunctivitis may cause symptoms such as redness, watering, swelling, and discharge from the eyes. It can spread through close contact, contaminated hands, and shared personal items.

Since students spend much of their time in school and shared campus facilities, CAFF students are encouraged to wash their hands regularly, avoid touching or rubbing their eyes, and refrain from sharing towels, handkerchiefs, or other personal items.

To strengthen awareness, CAFF Campus Nurse, Mrs. Faith Consuelo H. Hamac, RN, conducted a brief awareness session with students during their spare time. She led the campaign by reminding them to practice proper hygiene, avoid selfโ€‘medication, and seek professional advice if symptoms occur.

Students are also reminded to be considerate of their classmates and the wider CAFFamilia. Anyone experiencing possible symptoms should take precautions and seek guidance to help prevent the spread of infection within the campus community.

As the number of conjunctivitis cases continues to be monitored in Negros Oriental, awareness and proper hygiene remain essential in keeping the CAFF community safe and healthy.

Keep safe, keep your hands clean, and take care of your eyes, CAFFamilia.

The Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) CARE Center led a Depression and Su***de Awareness Session for students of the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (CAFF) at the NORSU Pamplona Extension Open Grounds on August 3, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The session was spearheaded by Maโ€™am Annie Rose S. Taguba, Director of Student Welfare Services, who discussed the importance of understanding mental health, recognizing the signs of depression, and breaking the stigma surrounding su***de and emotional struggles.

Ms. Taguba encouraged students to be more aware of the challenges people may face. She emphasized the value of listening without judgment, checking on friends who may be struggling, and reaching out for support from trusted individuals or counseling professionals when needed.

The discussion also underscored that mental health is just as important as physical health and that no one should face emotional difficulties alone. Students actively participated throughout the session by sharing insights and reflecting on the importance of creating a supportive and compassionate campus environment.

The successful session was facilitated by the CAFF College Designate, Maโ€™am Jonah Navarro, together with the CAFF CARE Peer Facilitators, with the support of the CAFF Student Government and CAFF ROTC Advance Officers.

The activity formed part of the universityโ€™s continuing efforts to promote studentsโ€™ overall wellโ€‘being and to strengthen depression and su***de awareness within the campus community. It also reminded students that seeking help is a step toward healing and that support is always available for those who need it. |via Vanessa Saliot, Ang Binhi

Students from the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (CAFF) of Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) gathered at the Pamplona Extension Open Ground on August 3, 2026, for an Alcohol and Drug Abuse Awareness Session held from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The program focuses on how peer pressure and oneโ€™s circle of friends can have either negative or positive impacts, depending on the company they keep. It also emphasized the importance of awareness about drugs, which pose serious risks to human health, family relationships, and future opportunities.

Mrs. Annie Rose S. Taguba reminded students to be mindful in choosing their circle of friends and surroundings, noting that while friends may seem supportive, they can sometimes be the reason for oneโ€™s downfall.

She also gave students the opportunity to present their thoughts and perspectives on drugs and alcohol through role plays and creative presentations, highlighting how substance abuse affects not only individuals but also their families and loved ones.

In closing, Mrs. Taguba stressed that there is no positive outcome in using alcohol and drugs, urging students to remain vigilant and remember that prevention is always better than cure. |via Annie Rose Tejas, Ang Binhi

The Student Affairs Services, the Gender and Development (GAD) Center, and the Student Welfare Services โ€“ Counseling, Assessment, Resources, and Enhancement (CARE) Center of Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) collaborated to successfully conduct the Orientation Program 2026 for freshmen, transferees, and shiftees, together with an Antiโ€‘Bullying Awareness Seminar, at the CAFF Farmhouse on July 27, 2026.

The program introduced incoming and transitioning students to the universityโ€™s academic policies, student support services, and campus regulations, aiming to ease their adjustment to college life. It also underscored the importance of responsible student conduct and familiarized participants with available resources for academic and personal development. The GAD Center discussed its definition, historical background, legal mandates, scope, vision, mission, goals, and key services, while also highlighting the 2026 Womenโ€™s Month Celebration and initiatives promoting gender equality and inclusive development within the university.

The Antiโ€‘Bullying Awareness Seminar focused on key Philippine laws such as the Safe Spaces Act (Republic Act No. 11313), the Antiโ€‘Bullying Act of 2013 (Republic Act No. 10627), the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 (Republic Act No. 10175), and the Antiโ€‘Sexual Harassment Act of 1995 (Republic Act No. 7877). Discussions emphasized legal protections against bullying, harassment, and cyberbullying, while also addressing realโ€‘life college scenarios including hazingโ€‘related intimidation, organizational harassment, classroom humiliation, body shaming, public embarrassment, group chat attacks, and social media bullying.

Students were guided on proper response mechanisms for victims, the role of bystanders in reporting and preventing incidents, the support provided by guidance counselors, and practical strategies for fostering a safer campus environment. The seminar concluded with a collective commitment from participants to promote respect, inclusivity, and accountability within the university community.

The collaboration was spearheaded by NORSU directors: Sir Julio E. Ventolero, Director of Student Affairs Services; Maโ€™am Aileen Rosette M. Felix, Director of the Gender and Development Center; and Maโ€™am Annie Rose S. Taguba, Director of Student Welfare Services and CARE Guidance Counselor.

This initiative was facilitated by the CAFF โ€“ NORSU Pamplona Extension team, led by Ma'am Jonah N. Navarro, College CARE designate, together with the CARE Peer Counselors of CAFF and the Student Government.

Through these efforts, the three offices, in collaboration with CAFFโ€™s facilitating team, reaffirmed NORSUโ€™s continuing commitment to maintaining a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment where students can thrive academically and personally. |via Vanessa Saliot, Ang Binhi
