Massive landslide hits San Luis, Agusan del Sur; 6 missing

Six people remain missing after a landslide struck Sitio Tagbulakan, Barangay Mahayahay in San Luis, Agusan del Sur, on Sunday night, September 14.

According to Municipal Engineer Marlon Aclan, days of continuous rain had weakened the mountainside soil and triggered the landslide in the early evening. The community is situated in a hilly area long considered vulnerable to slides during the rainy season.

State weather bureau PAGASA reported that localized thunderstorms were affecting parts of Mindanao that same evening, raising the risk of floods and landslides.

Authorities have yet to release the names of the missing residents as families are being informed. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with local responders working to clear debris and locate survivors.

Residents in nearby sitios have been urged to stay alert for further ground movement, as heavy rains are expected to continue. Officials reminded the public to heed evacuation warnings and avoid risky areas.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Love Story’ Turns 17: A Song That Defined a Generation

Seventeen years ago today, Taylor Swift released Love Story, the country-pop anthem that became a defining track of her career and a global favorite.

The single, inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet but with a happier ending, was released in September 2008 as part of her second album Fearless. It quickly topped charts worldwide, earning multi-platinum certifications and solidifying Swift’s status as one of the biggest artists of her generation.

With its fairytale storytelling, catchy chorus, and heartfelt emotion, Love Story resonated with young listeners navigating first love and family expectations. It became one of the best-selling singles of all time, with over 18 million copies sold globally.

In 2021, Swift re-recorded the song as part of Fearless (Taylor’s Version), introducing it to a new generation of fans while reclaiming ownership of her masters. The track once again charted worldwide, proving its timeless appeal.

More than a decade later, Love Story continues to be a staple in pop culture—played at weddings, covered by artists, and sung in stadiums by millions of “Swifties” who grew up with it.

What started as a young woman’s reimagined fairy tale has become a lasting anthem about love, hope, and rewriting your own ending.

Russia showcases hypersonic missiles, bombers in major drills

Russia staged large-scale military drills showcasing hypersonic missiles and nuclear-capable bombers on Sunday, a display of strength that Moscow said was aimed at deterring threats from the West.

The exercises, which involved long-range strategic bombers and advanced missile systems, were broadcast on state television to underline Russia’s growing reliance on its military power. President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly used such displays to project strength abroad and to reassure Russians at home of the country’s defenses.

Officials said the drills tested Russia’s ability to launch “massive retaliatory strikes” with both conventional and nuclear weapons. Among the weapons highlighted were hypersonic missiles that travel at speeds exceeding Mach 5, making them difficult to intercept with existing defense systems.

Military analysts view the display as part of Russia’s effort to assert itself in the face of continued Western support for Ukraine. Since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Moscow has stepped up its military drills, presenting them as preparation against what it describes as growing threats from NATO.

The show of force comes as tensions remain high in Europe and the wider world. Western nations continue to criticize Russia’s war in Ukraine, while Moscow insists its weapons are essential for “strategic stability.”

For ordinary Russians, state media has portrayed the drills as proof that their country remains a global power despite economic sanctions. But critics abroad warn that such exercises only fuel fears of escalation and increase the risk of miscalculation.

As the world grapples with multiple conflicts and shifting alliances, Russia’s latest military display serves as a reminder of how quickly global security can be tested in today’s uncertain climate.

China unveils 192 Gbps connector to replace HDMI, DisplayPort

In a breakthrough that could redefine digital displays, China has developed a new high-speed connector capable of transmitting up to 192 gigabits per second (Gbps). The technology promises to support 8K video with ease, far outpacing today’s HDMI and DisplayPort standards.

Current HDMI 2.1 reaches 48 Gbps, while DisplayPort 2.1 handles around 80 Gbps. China’s new connector more than doubles these figures, opening the door to sharper visuals, higher refresh rates, and more immersive experiences for gaming, streaming, and professional graphics.

Industry watchers say the move could lessen reliance on foreign-owned standards and licensing fees, strengthening China’s bid to set global tech benchmarks. If widely adopted, it could eventually signal the end of HDMI and DisplayPort’s dominance.

The new connector is expected to be rolled out in TVs, monitors, laptops, and other consumer electronics in the coming years. For everyday users, it could mean smoother viewing, faster response times, and next-level picture quality.

The race to control the future of display connectivity is heating up—and China has just raised the bar.
