Pikachu pulled from $0.85 vending machine is now worth thousands 😱
In 1998, this card could be obtained by purchasing a card sheet from a vending machine for 100 yen (about $0.85 USD at the time). Each sheet included 3 cards and a bonus - this “gag card”, featuring hand-drawn artwork by Dr. Kouichi Ooyama, a Pokémon TCG designer known for his humor and creativity.
Not only did Ooyama illustrate the card in his signature cartoon style, but he also snuck his own face into the bottom corner, making it one of the most self-aware cards of the era.
Once peeled from the sheet, this card stood out immediately and today, it’s a cult favorite among Pokémon collectors.
