1. Did you know?“Isla de Manguianes” was an old name for Mindoro? 🗺️
Did you know that Mindoro — the island many of us know today — once appeared in old maps and documents as “Isla de Manguianes”? 👀
It literally meant “Island of the Mangyan people.”
Yep! Long before modern maps, Mindoro was identified not just by its geography, but by the indigenous communities who lived there.
2. Did you know… the earliest possible name for Mindoro was Ma-i? 📜
Back in the 10th–13th centuries, Chinese records described a thriving trading place called Ma-i, which many historians believe was Mindoro. Traders from China sailed there to exchange ceramics, beads, metal goods, and more.
So Mindoro was already on the international map even before the Spanish arrived!
3. Did you know… early Spanish explorers called the island “Mina de Oro”? 🛶
When the Spaniards reached the Philippines in the 1500s, they heard rumors of gold in Mindoro.
So they called it Mina de Oro — “gold mine.”
(There was no real gold rush… but the name stuck for decades!)
