1. Who was Saint Maximilian Kolbe?
Saint Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish Franciscan priest, missionary, and ardent devotee of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He founded the Militia Immaculatae to lead souls to Christ through the Immaculate Heart of Mary. His life was marked by missionary zeal, tireless work in evangelization, and deep love for God and neighbor.
2. What made his love for Mary unique?
From a young age, Maximilian had a powerful vision of the Virgin Mary offering him two crowns: one white (purity) and one red (martyrdom). He chose both, showing his readiness to live a life of holiness and, if God willed, to give his life for others.
3. What trials did he face during World War II?
During the N**i occupation of Poland, Kolbe sheltered refugees, including Jews, in his friary. In 1941, he was arrested and sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp, a place of unimaginable cruelty and death.
4. How did he show Christ’s love in Auschwitz?
Amid starvation, disease, and brutality, Kolbe remained a beacon of hope: sharing his meager rations, hearing confessions in secret, and praying with prisoners. Even in chains, his spirit was free in Christ.
5. What happened that led to his martyrdom?
In July 1941, after a prisoner escaped from Auschwitz, the N**is chose ten men to die by starvation as punishment. One of the chosen, Franciszek Gajowniczek, cried out in despair, “My wife! My children!” Moved by compassion, Kolbe stepped forward and said: "I am a Catholic priest. I wish to die for that man."
6. How did he die?
Maximilian was thrown into a starvation bunker with the other condemned men. While others cursed or wept, he prayed and led hymns. After two weeks, he was still alive: calm, praying, and encouraging others. The guards, impatient, killed him with a lethal injection on August 14, 1941, the eve of the Assumption of Mary.
7. Why is his death considered an act of perfect love?
Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13). Maximilian laid down his life not for a friend, but for a stranger: imitating Christ’s selfless love for all humanity.
8. What can we learn from Saint Maximilian Kolbe today?
We learn that holiness is not merely in words or rituals but in radical love. True Christian life means being willing to sacrifice comfort, freedom, and even life itself for the sake of another, just as Christ did for us.
