DOLE allots ₱32M for emergency jobs in Cagayan, Batanes after ‘Nando’

DOLE will release ₱32 million to provide emergency employment for Cagayan and Batanes residents whose jobs were affected by Tropical Depression “Nando.”

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has announced a ₱32-million emergency employment package for workers and residents in Cagayan and Batanes whose livelihoods were disrupted by Tropical Depression “Nando.”

The assistance will be implemented under the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program, which provides short-term work opportunities to individuals affected by natural disasters.

According to DOLE Region II Director Joel Gonzales, thousands of residents in agriculture, fishing, and small trade sectors were left without income after “Nando” brought heavy rains and strong winds that damaged farms, boats, and local infrastructure in the northernmost provinces of Luzon.

Beneficiaries will be hired for community-based work such as clearing debris, repairing public facilities, and restoring farmlands. The project will run for 10 to 30 days, depending on the extent of damage in each locality.

Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma said the initiative aims to help affected families “recover from loss of income and rebuild their communities.” He also emphasized that DOLE continues to coordinate with local government units to ensure quick rollout and transparency in fund distribution.

The emergency employment program is expected to benefit more than 6,000 workers across both provinces.

VILLAFLOR WITH CEBUANO ROOTS RETURNS TO HELP EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS IN NORTHERN CEBU

Bogo City, Cebu - Actor and Tarlac Board Member Arron Villaflor, whose father hails from Carcar, Cebu, recently returned to his family’s home province to lead a relief mission for communities devastated by the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Northern Cebu last September 30.

Villaflor led his team in distributing relief goods to affected families in San Remigio, Bogo City, Daanbantayan, Medellin, and Tabogon, reaching an estimated 1,000 to 1,500 households.
Relief packs included bottled water, rice, canned goods, sliced bread, tarpaulins for temporary shelters, packed meals, and juice for children.

“Cebu will always be close to my heart because it’s where my father’s family comes from. I felt compelled to be here and help our kababayans who were badly affected by the earthquake,” Villaflor said.

Residents expressed gratitude that Villaflor’s group reached even remote mountain communities.

“Siya ra baya gyud tawn ang nisulod diri sa among purok nga naa sa bukid kaayo, unya lisod kaayo’g dalan. Nanghatag sila’g mga hinabang diri sa bukid,” shared a resident of Bogo City.

On social media, relatives and netizens lauded Villaflor’s hands-on efforts:

“Appreciation post for my cousin, Arron Villaflor, for going above and beyond to help the victims of the recent earthquake in Northern Cebu. In times of hardship, it’s people like you who bring hope and strength to the community,” one post read.

Villaflor’s viral “Pray for Cebu” post was misunderstood by many who did not realize he had Cebuano roots on his father’s side.

His compassionate response, anchored by his Cebuano roots, reflects his deep connection to the communities affected by the disaster.

Gretchen Ho laments discrimination in Norway airport over PH corruption issue

TV host Gretchen Ho expressed frustration after a relative was denied a currency exchange in Oslo, Norway, allegedly due to “corruption and money laundering” in the Philippines.

TV host and journalist Gretchen Ho took to social media to express her disappointment after a relative was refused a currency exchange transaction at an airport in Oslo, Norway—allegedly because of the Philippines’ reputation for “corruption and money laundering.”

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ho shared her distress over the incident, saying it was painful to see Filipinos abroad being affected by the country’s negative global image. “What are we going to do about this, Pilipinas?” she wrote, urging reflection and action on the issue.

According to Ho, her family member was told by an airport foreign exchange counter staff that they could not process Philippine pesos due to concerns about corruption and money laundering linked to the Philippines.

The broadcaster said she has already reported the matter to the Philippine Ambassador to Norway to bring attention to the discriminatory treatment.

Many Filipinos online sympathized with Ho’s frustration, calling the incident unfair and “humiliating,” while others agreed it reflected the need to strengthen the country’s anti-corruption and financial transparency efforts.

The Philippine Embassy in Oslo has yet to issue a statement on the incident.
