HEADLINE: CMC Dean endorses Oct. 17 walkout

JUST IN: UP Diliman College of Media and Communication (CMC) Dean Diosa Labiste endorsed the university-wide walkout on Friday, Oct. 17, to mark the National Youth Day of Action.

The walkout seeks to intensify calls for accountability and justice against widespread government corruption.

"The lack of concrete action from the relevant government bodies necessitates that the youth and the broader masses unite once more on October 17 to demand full accountability from the highest offices of the land," UP CMC Student Council wrote in its request for Labiste's endorsement.

Tomorrow's walkout will begin with local protest clusters mobilizing at 10 a.m. and converging at 11:30 a.m. in Quezon Hall. The Diliman contingent will head to Mendiola in Manila at 2 p.m. to continue the protests.

WATCH: Maninindas along Fernandez Street in UP Diliman (UPD) rushed moving their stalls to a flood-prone area behind Benton Hall at around 7 p.m., Oct. 15, over a landscaping project in the UP School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) building.

They asked to postpone the transfer to the weekend but were told to relocate tonight by Office of the Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development, according to maninindas and UPD University Student Council (USC).

Without support from the administration, stall owners shouldered all costs in moving their already-battered kiosks, said Kuya Ramon, one of the affected maninindas. Only construction workers of the SLIS building helped with their transfer.

They were first notified about the relocation by the Samahan ng mga Manininda sa UP Campus last Friday, Oct. 10, according to Kuya Ramon and Ate Marisa, another stall owner.

They added maninindas are relocated until December to the space left by the CASAA Food Center, which was razed by fire in 2015. They worry over the lack of proper lighting and frequent ankle-deep flooding in the site.

UPD USC has requested assistance from the university administration for the relocated maninindas, Chairperson Joaquin Buenaflor told Tinig ng Plaridel.

This is a developing story.

Criticizing the Marcos Jr. administration's priorities, Kabataan Partylist Rep. Renee Co denounced the government's underfunding of the education sector over what she called the state’s P738-billion allocation for “fascist” operations in the House's version of the 2026 national budget bill.

With 287 affirmative votes, 12 negative votes and two abstentions, the House approved the proposed P6.793-trillion budget on its third and final reading today, Oct. 13.
