IN PHOTOS: UP Diliman's freshies, shiftees and transferees (FSTs) came together at the 2026 University Welcome Assembly held today, Sept. 7, at the University Theater.

The program officially introduced the FSTs to the university through messages from UP Diliman officials and deans, as well as performances by the UP Concert Chorus, UP Streetdance Club, UP Varsity Pep Squad and UP Varsity Pep Drummers.

A lightning rally led by the University Freshie Council capped off the program, calling for the conviction of Vice President Sara Duterte and government accountability for corruption, before the assembly concluded with the singing of "UP Naming Mahal."

HUNGER ALWAYS LINGERS

The UP Esports Varsity Team wrapped up its Valorant campaign with a bronze finish today, Sept. 7, at the MVP Studios in Mandaluyong.

This podium finish marks UP’s third semifinals appearance since Season 86, being the only team from last season’s Final Four to return to the stage this year.

NEWS UPDATE: The Office of the Ombudsman filed a plunder case against former House Speaker Martin Romualdez, former Ako Bicol Rep. Zaldy Co and two others at the Sandiganbayan today, Sept. 7, over alleged anomalous flood control projects.

Both Romualdez and Co were among the subjects of Ombudsman complaints for preliminary investigation filed in July, alleging plunder and violation of the Anti-Money Laundering Act.

Co faces two other malversation cases over a substandard road d**e project in Oriental Mindoro and an allegedly non-existent flood control project in Bulacan.

The UP Esports Varsity Team ended its Valorant campaign after an 8-13, 7-13 loss against the Adamson Soaring Falcons today, Sept. 7, at the MVP Studios in Mandaluyong.

Despite falling short of reaching their first-ever Finals, the Fighting Maroons once again secured a podium finish and wrapped up the season with a 1-2-1 slate.

Trigger warning: Mentions of r**e

NEWS UPDATE: The Quezon City Regional Trial Court has dismissed the r**e case against former College of Arts and Letters Representative to the University Student Council (USC) Jobert Pillas, according to a court resolution ordered May 26.

The court said that the prosecution failed to "clarify the ambiguity in the private complainant's expression of non-consent" after the judge denied its request to recall a witness.

"This Court is constrained to acquit accused on the ground of reasonable doubt," the document read.

Pillas was formally expelled from the USC on March 16, following a preventive suspension over the criminal-legal charges against him.

The UP Office of Anti-Sexual Harassment said that there are no pending cases against Pillas as of June 11.

UP Solidaridad, the broadest alliance of student publications and writers’ organizations in the University of the Philippines (UP), calls out and condemns the administrative and external intervention against UP Diliman publications, following their reportage on the suspension, expulsion, and r**e case involving former College of Arts and Letters Representative to the University Student Council Jobert Pillas.

At stake is the fundamental right of the campus press to report freely and exercise independent editorial judgment without administrative intimidation or threats of legal consequences.

UP Solidaridad and its member publications and writers’ organizations condemn the administrative and external intervention against UP Diliman publications. We call on OSPA, DLO, and Pillas’ party to cease all forms of pressure against the campus press, respect the editorial independence of Philippine Collegian, Kalasag, Sinag, Tinig ng Plaridel, and all UP Diliman student publications, and uphold their right to report critically and freely.

WATCH: UP varsity athletes took the spotlight at the 2026 UP Pep Rally as the community sent off the Fighting Maroons ahead of on Friday, Sept. 4, at the University Theater.

With “For Everyone, UAAP” as this season’s theme, the Maroons shared who they think the UAAP is for beyond the athletes and the coaches, alongside their preparations heading into another campaign and a message to the UP community.
