WATCH: PLA fires flares at unarmed PCG aircraft over Kalayaan Island Group

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) fired multiple flares at an unarmed PCG aircraft conducting a legitimate Maritime Domain Awareness flight over the Kalayaan Island Group on Sept. 7.

The PCG said the flares were fired by Chinese forces occupying Zamora (Subi) Reef and Panganiban (Mischief) Reef, putting flight safety at risk.

PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan said: “Flares were fired at an unarmed Coast Guard aircraft. The PCG does not need to characterize this behavior.”

The PCG said it will continue conducting MDA flights over the West Philippine Sea and documenting alleged violations of international law.

Right-of-way hurdle cleared for LRT-1 Las Piñas Station

The Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) and the Villar Group have signed a memorandum of agreement for the donation of right-of-way needed to build the Las Piñas Station of the LRT-1 Cavite Extension Project.

Transportation Secretary Banoy Lopez said the Department of Transportation (DOTr) will expedite construction of the project, following President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to address right-of-way issues and fast-track major mass transport projects.

The expansion is expected to help ease daily commuting in southern Metro Manila.

Sept. 12 declared Day of National Mourning for National Artist Resil Mojares

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has declared Sept. 12, 2026 as a Day of National Mourning for the passing of National Artist for Literature Resil B. Mojares.

Under Proclamation No. 1434, the Philippine flag will be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset on Sept. 12 at all government buildings and installations nationwide.

The proclamation recognized Mojares for his contributions as a teacher, scholar, essayist, fictionist, and historian, particularly in promoting regional literature and history and shaping Cebuano and national identity.
