"Mama, ganito din po ba kayo noon
tuwing may bagyo, walang pasok?"
The answer: Hindi (No)
Come to think of it, things weren't "this" bad way back then.
Amidst blackouts and floods in some parts of the country, while tuning in to typhoon updates on the TV or radio, people didn't worry as much as we do now.
So, what happened?
Most people lack discipline and accountability, but are instead plentiful in laziness and greed. It is easy to blame the government for failed program implementations that abound in our society, but ask yourself, what have you done to help?
Have you thrown all your trash properly? I mean all of them.
Do you practice waste segregation? I know it's hard.
Do you teach your kids the responsibility to dispose of their trash properly?
Well, I hope you do, because all the plastic bottles, candy wrappers, plastic packaging, bubble wrap, and more might end up somewhere they're not supposed to be.
What we often see floating along riverbanks and drainage canals are accumulated trash of irresponsible and lazy individuals who think they are entitled to litter anywhere as they please, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
True enough, "Ang basurang itinapon mo, babalik sa'yo" to add to that "mandadamay ka pa!" when it comes flooding back to you literally and figuratively.
But wait, there's more! How can we forget about those developers who sell houses in subdivisions and condo units without proper drainage facilities?
"Pera pera na lang ba talaga?"
People who acquire your overpriced yet substandard housing spend their hard-earned money expecting safety, yet even their streets end up flooded because you decided to pay more attention to profits.
The same goes for those contractors who get to profit from government projects intended to mitigate flooding; haven't you earned enough to ensure those dams, floodwalls, levees, and drainage systems are up to standard or are properly maintained? SHAME ON YOU!
This post would also like to address the logging and mining companies that made the situation even worse, and the politicians who fill their pockets with hush money to keep the illegal ones operational. Yes, it is high time you think about the future generations and push for best practices in your respective fields. Most landslides and flash floods could have been prevented if it weren't for you.
And for those politicians, especially the new ones, please take your job seriously. You are there to serve the nation and make an impactful change that alters the course of the country's state during calamities. Wouldn't it be better to prevent floods in your area rather than conduct relief operations afterwards? Do some research and address the needs of your people. Think of everyone's future, not just yours.
I hope in the coming years, things will be better...
Stay safe, everyone! ๐ญ
