Valentine Day: From Pagan to Christian ritual

Lupercalia, a festival to honor Lupercus, the god of fertility, and to ensure the city’s prosperity. The rituals were bold and strange to modern eyes:
Priests called Luperci would gather at the cave at dawn. They sacrificed goats and a dog, symbols of vitality and protection, and smeared the blood on their foreheads. Afterward, they wiped the blood clean with wool soaked in milk, a symbol of purification.
Then came the parade through the city. The Luperci, running naked or lightly clad, carried strips of the sacrificed goat’s hide, called februa, and struck anyone they met—especially women—with them.
