ATM: Altermidya files a complaint before the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology against the jail warden of the Tacloban City Jail for violating the rights of community journalist Frenchie Mae Cumpio and lay worker Marielle Domequil. The group says the jail warden infringed on the lawyer-client privileged communications, denied the right of Frenchie and Marielle to seek appropriate medical attention, among others.

FROM THE ARCHIVES: Last year, Tagum Regional Trial Court Branch 2 convicted human rights defenders known as Talaingod 13 of child trafficking case. Lumad youth themselves rejected the conviction and emphasized that the Talaingod 13 rescued them from the hands of the military.

Talaingod 13 refers to the members of a solidarity team of human rights defenders and Lumad school teachers who helped rescue Lumad students victimized by the forced closure of Salugpongan Ta’Tanu Igkanogon Community Learning Center Inc. (STTICLC) and the Community Technical College of Southeastern Mindanao (CTCSM) during Rodrigo Duterte's administration.

"The ban on Fides Lim is detrimental to the interests of the political prisoners and the other PDLs she has been servicing, and must be lifted forthwith for their sake."

“They should check their double standards where high-profile human rights violators and criminals such as Gen. Jovito Palparan, guilty of the disappearance of UP activists Karen Empeño and Sherlyn Cadapan, has allegedly been receiving VIP or ‘Very Important Prisoner’ treatment."

NOW: The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) holds a solidarity gathering at the Commission on Human Rights (CHR), urging the Philippine court to reverse the unjust conviction of human rights defenders known as Talaingod 13.

In time for the first year anniversary of Tagum RTC Branch 2’s decision, the groups reiterate their stand against the continuing vilification of the Talaingod 13, ongoing militarization of Lumad communities, and red-tagging. They also amplify calls to defend ancestral lands and respect indigenous peoples’ rights.

HANGGANG KAMATAYAN, AMIN ANG ISLA: Tonight, the Molbog indigenous community in Marihangin, Bugsuk, Palawan, marks its 100th night of unwavering defense of their community against private security guards affiliated with JMV Security Services, allegedly hired by Bricktree Properties, a subsidiary of San Miguel Corporation.

On April 4, eighty private armed guards had been deployed in their island, increasing tensions in the community as the residents asserted their collective right to ancestral land.

“Hindi kami aalis. Hindi kami titiklop. Lalaban kami hanggang dulo. Ipagtatanggol namin ang Marihangin hanggang kamatayan,” said Sambilog - Balik Bugsuk Movement in a post.

A substantial percentage of gamblers (41%) belong to the poorest, with monthly incomes ranging from P1,000 to P5,000. The amounts of money they lose, of course, are not comparable to big rollers who play in casinos or bet big in cockfights and can lose tens of millions in a matter of seconds.

Once an addict, now a helping hand.

Balik-Tanaw | 'Who do you think, was a neighbor (kapwa) to the victim?'

Jesus led the scholar not with an expected Scriptural provision. Instead of offering a legal definition, Jesus tells a story. Jesus, who was so immersed with people, must have known so many stories from the ground. So he narrated an anecdote to answer the scholar.

It is under the Media Impact Philippines project, implemented by the Mindanao Institute of Journalism, publisher of MindaNews. It honors the enduring legacy of the late Patricio P.
