ROADWISE 2025 Concludes with Groundbreaking Innovations and Solutions for Safer Roads

We wrapped up ROADWISE: The Road Safe Systems Challenge — an open call for students and professionals to rethink road safety through the Safe Systems Approach:

🔍 Safer Roads. Safer Vehicles. Safer People. Safer Speeds. Better Crash Response.

CONGRATULATIONS to our winners! 🙌

🏆 Champion – BraveResponse Solutions
AutoResQ: A Tri-Axis Collision Detection System integrated with Convolutional Neural Network–based Driver Monitoring for Automated Emergency Response.

🥈 1st Runner-Up – The Traffic Solvers
You’re Road: A comprehensive reimagining of Governor Lim Avenue in Zamboanga City through context-sensitive design and human-centered planning.

🥉 2nd Runner-Up – DEM Innovations LTD
Lulubog-Lilitaw: A proposal for automated, illuminated pedestrian bollards designed to enhance safety and enable the accident detection system at Monumento LRT.

🚧 What's Next? Paving the Way Forward
The ROADWISE 2025 journey doesn't end here. We’re taking these winning ideas beyond the competition and into real-world application:

- Collaborative Consultation with LGUs
Initial dialogues will be held with local government units (LGUs) and relevant agencies to assess feasibility, align with local plans, and explore pilot implementations of selected innovations in high-risk areas.

- Codevelopment and Technical Refinement
Promising entries will undergo further co-development with tech experts, transport engineers, urban planners, and emergency response stakeholders to refine hardware/software integration and system calibration.

- Open Sourcing of Tools and Frameworks
In the spirit of inclusive innovation, components of these projects—such as detection algorithms, system architecture, and urban design templates—will be made open source, enabling continuous improvement and adaptation by other cities, schools, and stakeholders.

🤝 The RoadWise collaboration is brought to us by SafeTravelPH, Palafox Associates, UP Institute of Civil Engineering, and UP Data Science Society.

🚧 Why speed limits alone aren’t enough.

What if the key to road safety isn’t just about stricter rules—but smarter, systemic design?

The Vision Zero approach reminds us:

✔️ People will always make mistakes.
✔️ But the system should be designed so those mistakes don't result in death or serious injury.
✔️ It’s better to call a tow truck than an ambulance.

💡 Watch this recently uploaded explainer by journalist Justine Underhill to understand why rethinking design and systems is so important:

https://youtu.be/v6LIYQRglnM?si=2TiPV7YQQXSkb7IS

🌍 Vision Zero is built on key pillars that participants of should keep in mind:

Data-Driven — Uses crash data to identify safety issues, track progress, and evaluate interventions.
Ethical — Prioritizes the lives of all road users, especially vulnerable groups like pedestrians and cyclists.
Engineering — Designs safer intersections, street lighting, and pedestrian-friendly spaces.
Enforcement — Applies smarter speed regulation, red light cameras, and anti-drunk driving monitoring and penalties.
Education — Informs the public about road risks and promotes responsible behavior.
Collaboration — Unites government agencies, civil society, experts, and communities to create shared solutions.

📣 As we close Road Safety Month, let’s remember:
🚦 The work doesn’t end here. The urgency for safer roads continues beyond May.

🧠 Now it's your turn. How would you redesign, reimagine, or reinvent a system that keeps everyone safer?

🚦 Enhancing Road Safety Through Open Data Collaboration🚦

Our partners from SafeTravelPH revamped the government's Data for Road Incident Visualization, Evaluation, and Reporting System (DRIVERS), an open source initiative by the World Bank.

Rebuilt using ReactJS, DRIVERS is now more developer-friendly and poised to foster greater collaboration within the open-source community.

Why This Matters for Public Transport:

🚌 Improved Data Collection: Accurate and timely incident reporting enables public transport operators to identify and address safety concerns proactively.

📊 Informed Decision-Making: data analysis supports policymakers in crafting strategies that enhance commuter safety and optimize transport systems.

🤝 Community Engagement: By involving citizens in reporting and validating incidents, we cultivate a culture of shared responsibility and collective action towards safer roads.

Key Features of the New DRIVERS Platform:

1. 🔒 Enhanced Data Privay: Sensitive information is safeguarded, accessible only to authorized personnel via secure Google login.

2. ✅ Robust Data Validation: All reports undergo administrative review before inclusion in the database, ensuring data accuracy and reliability.

3. 🧒 Focus on Child Safty: Special filters highlight incidents involving minors, facilitating targeted interventions to protect our young commuters.

4. 📱 Mobile Accessibility: The SafeTravelPH Mobile App empowers users to submit reports on-the-go, making participation seamless and convenient.

Let's harness the power of open data and community collaboration to make our roads safer for everyone. 🚸
