What’s Behind Luto-Motto?

“Luto” is the Tagalog word for “cook” and “Motto” is the Japanese word for “more”. Although this page is mostly focused on cooking, we can offer more than that. We are also into travel, and many other subjects of interest usually pertaining to my country the Philippines, and also Japan where I currently live. God has blessed me with a Filipino-Japanese wife, three lovely children and a grandson.

Family life is getting more challenging nowadays while we live in a generation where we have to leave our own country, to face the hustles and bustles of this world, so we could take good care of our family and give them our best. We tend to work hard at daytime and rush home at night to prepare dinner, only to find out that we ran out of “ulam” ideas. With that thought in mind, I came up with this page, carrying with me the burning desire to reach out and help others who share the same experiences with me. You can call me “your friendly kitchen mate”. I am not a professional chef though, and that has made me fully qualified to help people who can only rely on “lutong bahay” recipes. We can work together, find a solution to everyday kitchen hurdles, and turn it into a fun-filled home cooking extravaganza. I am an architect by profession, and so my mind is always open to innovations. I can find solutions when materials are scarce, and able to make good use of indigenous ones that are available locally. Simple minds call it “para-raan lang”. The intelligents call it “outside-the-box". Whichever way we call it, I find “ingenuity” plays a significant role in the subject of “cooking”, which happens to be my other passion. Yes, in fact, I learned the basics and was encouraged by my mother into cooking at home, and eventually, inspired by one of my uncles, who usually cooks for larger gatherings like “Fiesta”, “kasalan”, “binyagan” etc. who also, at the same time cooks “pulutan” along the side. Since then, I had been engaged in “barkada cook-outs” and some simple gatherings and celebrations, together with friends and relatives, eventually promoted as the “chef of the household” by the time I settled down. In fact, from time to time, I am also involving my family members joining me in my Youtube channel where you could see all my recipe videos and travel adventures. I am also active in Instagram where I have a larger circle of friends who has the same passion.

I respect tradition, and the way how our ancestors invented these classical dishes. But, I also believe we can sometimes make a “twist”, without compromising tradition. In architecture, we have a modern design style called “neoclassical”. It’s basically a classical Greek and Roman design being applied and blended with modern designs. It is just the same with food...not to mention, traveling. So, are you guys ready to twist? Tara, samahan niyo ko...
