In 2012, Xi Jinping became general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, and in 2013 he was appointed president of the People’s Republic of China. Xi has pursued an aggressive anti-religion policy, imposing restrictive regulations and increasing persecution. Communist authorities have closed hundreds of church buildings, arrested pastors and church members on spurious charges such as “bad business practices,” and prohibited the online sale of Bibles as well as prohibiting teaching anyone younger than 18 the gospel of Christ. By 2021, the government had installed millions of surveillance cameras equipped with advanced facial-recognition technology, placing many near churches to identify those who attend worship services. Pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ in China who face intense pressure and opposition.
