📰 NEWS: Group Assessment in English and Math Conducted; Literacy and Numeracy Skills of Grades 7–10 Evaluated

CARMEN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – On the second day of the Opening Block during the first week of classes, a systematic and organized Group Assessment was conducted for learners from Grade 7 to 10, covering the subjects of English and Mathematics.

The activity was spearheaded and successfully implemented by the dedicated faculty members of the English Department: Sir Vincent F. Manzo (Grade 7), Ma’am Sheenna Lee M. Fregon (Grades 8 & 9), and Ma’am Ma. Cristina F. Mazo (Grade 10). Meanwhile, the Mathematics Department team was composed of Ma’am Ochin G. Barcelona (Grade 7), Sir Ronnie M. Fetalvero (Grade 8), Ma’am Vina V. Tome (Grade 9), and Ma’am Nikka Jane F. Gabayno (Grade 10). The smooth ex*****on of this undertaking was made possible through the exemplary leadership and valuable guidance of the School Principal, Sir Job F. Mallorca, who laid down the key activities and guidelines to be carried out throughout the opening week of classes.

The primary objective of this assessment is to determine and evaluate the learners’ level of readiness and academic proficiency, specifically focusing on their literacy and numeracy skills. This serves as a vital step to identify the current standing of each student, measure their mastery of fundamental concepts, and pinpoint specific competencies that require further development and strengthening.

As part of the evaluation process, standardized assessment tools were utilized: the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) for English, and the Readiness in Mathematics Assessment (RMA) together with the Diagnostic Test on Numeracy (DUNT) for Mathematics. These Department of Education instruments are designed to achieve the following specific goals:

✅ Determine the proficiency level of each learner in reading comprehension and mathematical skills, classifying them based on their performance and understanding;
✅ Serve as a baseline data for teachers in designing appropriate teaching strategies, learning materials, and intervention programs that directly address the specific needs of the students; and
✅ Identify learners who require additional guidance and support, ensuring they are properly enrolled and included in the ARAL Program (Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning) – a significant DepEd initiative designed to provide extra opportunities and targeted interventions for learners needing assistance to improve their skills and keep pace with the learning process.

The ARAL Program aims to bridge learning gaps and ensure that every student receives the necessary support to recover and enhance their academic competencies.

According to the subject teachers, the results of this assessment will serve as a crucial guide to improve and adjust instructional approaches, ensuring that no learner is left behind. This initiative stands as a testament to the school’s commitment, under the leadership of Sir Job F. Mallorca, to uphold quality education, continuously enhance literacy and numeracy standards, and guarantee that every student receives the appropriate attention and support needed for their academic success.

✅ Alamin ang antas ng kakayahan ng mag-aaral sa pagbasa at pag-unawa;
