A Grace in Disguise: A Short Reflection on Being Stranded
Rev. Fr. Richard Dumalag

Sometimes the moments that stop us in our tracks are the very moments God uses to move our hearts.

What we first saw as an inconvenience, our Diocesan Pastoral Team being stranded in Iloilo after attending the Metropolitan Research Assembly, slowly revealed itself to be a quiet blessing. Sometimes God interrupts our plans not to burden us, but to give us space to breathe, to listen, and to rediscover His presence in the unexpected.

We often think mission happens only in our schedules, our plans, and the programs we carefully prepare. But this experience reminded us that mission also lives in the pauses, the waiting, and the unplanned spaces where we learn to trust that God is still shaping our journey.

Being stranded became more than a delay; it became an invitation: an invitation to slow down, to appreciate one another, and to notice the simple graces we often overlook when life moves too quickly.

In this unexpected situation, we experienced the generosity of the Archdiocese of Jaro, whose kindness turned our difficulty into a moment of hospitality and communion. Their warm welcome and readiness to accommodate us at the Residencia Arzobispo de Jaro was more than just an act of generosity it was a living reminder of the Church’s heart: open, compassionate, and always ready to serve. In their embrace, we felt the care of a family, and through them, we saw the gentle providence of God at work.

Thanks to this experience, we realize that being stranded did not stop our mission; it deepened it. It taught us patience, strengthened our unity, and reminded us that God’s blessings often come wrapped in unexpected forms. What could have been a moment of frustration and disturbance became a moment of grace, one that renewed our spirit to continue serving with gratitude, openness, and renewed hope.

May this experience remind us that the very moments that interrupt our plans can also be the moments God uses to shape us. As He did in Iloilo, may He continue to surprise us with grace in the unexpected, to deepen our trust when our paths shift, and to open our hearts to become, like the Archdiocese of Jaro, living instruments of compassion and generosity wherever He leads us. Through every pause and every unplanned turn, may we always remember: God is still moving our hearts. Truly, a grace in disguise! 😊❤️🙏

Life is not about talking, watching and correcting rather it is about connecting and listening. When you talk you are only repeating what you already know. But if you listen, you may learn something new. ❤️😊🙏

Sunday Mass sa bukid diri sa GKK Bakid…

Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Grateful to spend this Area Mass surrounded by God’s beauty in nature and community. Indeed, treasure isn’t always gold. Sometimes it’s peace, prayer, and a place like this.❤️😊🙏

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:21)

Most hearts chase gold and glory, forgetting the God who gave them breath. Yes, Gold may buy comfort, glory may bring applause, but only God gives true rest. So, the invitation is this: Chase the One who made the gold, not the gold itself.

Today, ask yourself these following questions:

What am I truly valuing? Where am I investing my time, energy, and affection? Is my heart chasing the temporary... or rooted in the eternal?❤️😊🙏

Something to think about…🤔🤔🤔

Life is like a cup of coffee; bitter at times, sweet at others, but always best when savored slowly. It warms us, wakes us, reminds us to pause. The steam rising from the cup is like our days; fleeting, fragile and beautiful. We don’t always get to choose the beans life gives us, but we can choose how we brew it, with patience, care, and love. In the end, it’s not about how full the cup is, but how deeply we appreciate each sip. Appreciate life the way you treasure each sip; fully, mindfully and gratefully. Savor life, one sip at a time. ❤️😊🙏

What PCNE XI Taught Me: Padayon in Listening and Serving!

Joining PCNE XI was a powerful reminder for me that being Church today means walking together, clergy, religious, and lay faithful not in isolation, but in real collaboration. The call to a synodal Church is not just about having more meetings or structures, but about building a community where everyone’s voice matters and where listening becomes a way of life.

I realized that true ministry today must move beyond clericalism and individualism. We need to embrace an inter-ministerial approach, where we recognize the gifts of every baptized person and share responsibility for the Church’s mission.

What touched me most is how deeply the Church is called to listen especially to those at the margins. Listening is not a sign of weakness, but of humility, openness, and love. When we truly listen, we reflect the heart of Christ, the Good Shepherd.

As I move forward from PCNE, I carry this mission with me: to help foster a Church rooted in communion, participation, and mission, a Church that listens, discerns, and walks together.

One heart, One Church, One Mission, Padayon! 🙏❤️😊

Day 3 PCNEXI

Characteristics of a Synodal Church in the Philippines

1. Listening, Discernment, and Accompaniment

We dream of a Church that listens not just with ears, but with the heart — a Church that knows how to stay and be silent, and how to walk with the wounded.

2. Formation for Conversion and Mission

We dream of a Church where formation is lifelong, rooted in Christ, and alive with mission — a Church that teaches not only doctrines, but teaches how to love.

3. Accountable and Collaborative
Leadership/Governance Structure

We dream of a Church led by servant-leaders — where authority is not a privilege, but a responsibility shared in trust.

4. Inclusive Participation - BECs, Grassroots, Marginalized Sectors

We dream of a Church where everyone belongs,
and no one is invisible.

5. Partnership and Outreach

We dream of a Church that steps into the world with open hands — ready to serve, to dialogue, and to witness to Christ in every space.🙏❤️😊
