From Refuse to Resource

BCDA is currently processing an unsolicited proposal for the facility, which will be subject to a Swiss Challenge. The site is designed to accommodate not just Clark’s waste, but that of Pampanga, Tarlac, Bataan, and surrounding areas. It is also expected to help boost power supply in the region and serve the growing energy requirements of Clark’s locators and future investors. The project draws inspiration from international benchmarks, including waste-to-energy systems in Japan, Australia, and Hawaii.

It was the kind of craving that hits you out of nowhere and is impossible to ignore. As the morning session of the workshop at school ended, my mind was occupied by the thought of craving sisig—something savory, smoky-scented, served on a hot plate that would fill my empty stomach. It started as a simple craving, but unexpectedly, it turned into something more to discover.

The journey began when my feet led me to the food court at Gate 8, which is near the area of the workshop. The sun was at its peak—it was 12 noon, the hottest part of the day. Walking toward the food court felt longer than usual, making me even hungrier and crave something that could refresh me.

As I arrived at the food court, there were a lot of students dining despite the heat, which only proved the popularity of the area. With a variety of dishes available—Korean meals like kimbap, Korean ramen, samgyup bento, traditional Filipino dishes, creamy frappes, fruity shakes, milk tea, juices, and more—my eyes were still stuck on Doc’s Sizzlers. It’s a stall offering various sizzling plate dishes, especially the one I had been craving: sizzling pork sisig.

As the staff served my order on an iron plate, the savory aroma filled the air, making me even hungrier. After all, pork sisig is one of my favorite famous dishes in Pampanga. Moreover, according to the Department of Tourism, Pampanga’s sisig has been featured in different food expos.

Doc’s Sizzlers may not serve the most authentic pork sisig, but their version is definitely worth a try. Surprisingly, their sizzling pork sisig only costs ₱60—much cheaper than other food stalls and definitely affordable for students.

While dining, the heat of the weather made me uncomfortable, which led me to visit the mixed fruit shake stall nearby. They serve various fruit shake options, and I chose one of their best sellers: mango-banana, which matched my fruity shake cravings. The fruit shake had a perfect blend of ice—leaving no icy chunks—and the natural sweetness of the fruits made it taste more fruity and organic. It had a perfect tropical blend of flavor.

With that, together with the sizzling pork sisig, I only spent ₱110 for a savory lunch and refreshing drink. Given the affordability of the food court at Gate 8, it became clear to me why many students keep coming to the area.

For those who haven’t been here, I recommend the place if you're looking for a variety of food options to try. Let your feet lead you to the food court near Gate 8, where you can enjoy sizzling foods and refreshing drinks—perfect for student-friendly meals.
