For years, we have been told to admire the Filipino peopleโ€™s resilience. Every typhoon, every flood, every disaster, we hear the same words: โ€œMakakaahon din tayo.โ€ And yes, we do. We always find a way to survive.

But hanggang kailan tayo puro survive?

Here in Pampanga, particularly in the 4th District, flooding has become something people already expect whenever a strong typhoon or Habagat comes. The roads flood. Transportation becomes difficult. Classes are suspended. Families protect what they can. Then comes the relief goods, temporary assistance, and libreng sakay using dump trucks.

We appreciate these efforts. Pero hanggang relief goods na lang ba?

Relief is important during a disaster, but it should not become the only response to a problem that happens repeatedly. If the same communities continue to flood year after year, shouldnโ€™t we also be asking what is being done before the next disaster arrives?

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. once referred to disasters and extreme weather as part of the โ€œnew normal.โ€ But if this is the new normal, are we simply expected to accept it as our normal life? Is the consistent flooding during every typhoon something we should learn to live with instead of something our government should work to address?

And then there are communities facing even greater danger.

The recent incident in Lubao, Pampanga, where a house along the river were swept away, reminds us that disasters can quickly turn deadly. It is easy to say that residents should have known the risks of living near a river. And yes, people also have a responsibility to follow safety regulations. But government also has a responsibility to enforce those regulations, warn communities about danger zones, monitor vulnerable areas, and prevent people from being placed in situations where their homes and lives are at risk.

We cannot simply wait for a disaster to happen before asking the governmentโ€™s helpโ€”because itโ€™s their responsibility to serve people, not a favor that we have to ask for.

The people of Pampanga do not only need relief after a disaster. We need prevention before one happens. We need better flood control, safer communities, proper enforcement of regulations, reliable transportation, effective evacuation plans, and long-term solutionsโ€”not just temporary assistance every time the water rises.

And yes, we pay taxes.

We do not pay taxes for politicians. We pay taxes for public service.

Government positions are not merely titles. They are responsibilities entrusted by the people. Serving the public should mean working for their safety and welfare, with dignity, accountability, and integrity.

Stop glorifying Filipino resilience as if suffering is something we should be proud of.

We should be proud of Filipinos for helping one another, for surviving, and for standing back up, because that is what being Filipino is about.

But we should not have to keep standing back up from the same problems. โ€

Maybe the question should no longer be โ€œHow resilient are Filipinos?โ€

Maybe itโ€™s time to ask:

โ€œWhy are Filipinos constantly being forced to be resilient in the first place whenever disaster strikes?โ€

Because as Filipinos, we deserve better public serviceโ€”not just temporary solutions like relief goods, libreng sakay, and financial assistance.

The Student Society on Information Technology Education (SSITE), successfully conducted โ€œProject ACCESS: Anong Ganap, CITizens?โ€ last August 26, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM via Google Meet.

The activity served as a quick kamustahan among the BSIT Students from 1st Year to 3rd Year, providing them with an opportunity to take a short break, connect with one another, and learn more about the various systems developed by the BSIT Students itself.

The following CIT-developed systems were presented by their respective developers and representatives, highlighting their features and functions:

UA Labsign โ€” Pauline Bernadette Ochoa, Sophia Pineda, and Jose Miguel Garcia
CIT Appointment โ€” Charlene Lugtu, Glenn Peรฑa, and Ronian Gulles
Certifier โ€” Aaron Laxamana, Yaslee GJ Guevarra, and Aian Jae Garcia
SSITE Website โ€” Stephany Dela Peรฑa, Hanna Samantha Lising, and Roi Vince Pacleb
CIT Website โ€” Graciella Pastoral, Hanna Samantha Lising, and Kelvin Rhay Dela Cruz

Throughout the activity, the students were able to understand the purpose, features, and functions of the different systems, helping them to better recognize how these developed systems can support their academic needs and student experience. The activity also gave students the opportunity to share their thoughts, suggestions, and ideas for future activities to be prepared by SSITE.

Overall, the โ€œProject ACCESS: Anong Ganap CITizens?โ€ highlighted the importance of keeping the students informed and involved not just in information session but also in activities where it could connect students, and allowing them to learn, and share their ideas toward future activities of CIT and SSITE.

The College of Information Technology (CIT) welcomed its new and current faculty members through an orientation and faculty meeting led by CIT Dean and School of Technological Sciences (STS) Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Joey M. Suba on July 30, 2026.

The orientation served as an important onboarding activity designed to familiarize the newly appointed faculty members with the University's academic systems, institutional policies, teaching expectations, and professional standards. It also provided an opportunity to establish a shared understanding of the responsibilities that come with being part of the CIT faculty community.

Dr. Suba presented an overview of the School of Technological Sciences, including its academic direction, organizational structure, and expectations for faculty members. The discussion also covered tentative teaching loads, the School ERP (SERP), Google Workspace onboarding, the University's grading system, and proper use of university branding in academic and professional materials. Meanwhile, Ms. Grace Tiqui shared insights on the current syllabus template and preparation.

Particular emphasis was placed on the University's policies and practices that guide faculty members in the delivery of instruction. These included the strict observance of the Angelus and the 3:00 p.m. prayer, policies on online classes, substitution and make-up classes, and the University's no-collection policy. The orientation also discussed the roles of class advisers, consultation hours, punctuality, and professionalism as essential components of effective faculty service.

To further support quality instruction and student learning, Dr. Suba also highlighted the appropriate use of English as the medium of instruction, access to library resources, and policies governing the use of computer laboratories and wireless casting facilities. These guidelines are intended to ensure that faculty members maximize the University's academic and technological resources while maintaining an orderly and productive learning environment.

The meeting also emphasized that effective teaching extends beyond classroom instruction. Faculty members were reminded of the importance of professionalism, adherence to institutional policies, responsiveness to students, and responsible use of university facilities and digital platforms.

The orientation provided the new faculty members with a clearer understanding of their roles and responsibilities as educators within the University of the Assumption. More importantly, it established a common foundation for collaboration, accountability, and excellence as they begin their service to the CIT community.

Through initiatives such as this faculty onboarding program, the College of Information Technology continues to build on its PAASCU Level 2 accredited status, strengthening its commitment to quality instruction, continuous professional development, technological competence, and responsible academic service. By equipping both new and continuing faculty members with a clear understanding of institutional standards and expectations, CIT reinforces the culture of quality and excellence that supports the University's educational mission.
