Tenchu: Stealth Assassins

Released for the PlayStation in Japan on February 26, 1998, Tenchu: Stealth Assassins was developed by Acquire and became the first game in the Tenchu series. Set in 16th-century Japan, it follows the ninja Rikimaru and Ayame of the Azuma Ninja Clan as they undertake missions for Lord Gohda. Instead of relying on straightforward combat, the game puts stealth at the center of its gameplay, encouraging players to stay hidden, approach enemies carefully, and eliminate targets without being detected.

The game takes place across 10 missions set in locations such as towns, temples, forests, caves, and dungeons. Players can use a variety of ninja tools, including throwing stars, grappling hooks, and caltrops, while the game uses fully 3D environments to create its stealth-focused gameplay. Takuma Endo served as director, Masami Yamamoto as producer, and Noriyuki Asakura composed the music. Sony Music Entertainment Japan published the original Japanese release, while Activision brought the game to North America on August 31, 1998.

I still haven't played Tenchu myself, but I recently came across some clips of it and honestly, it looks great. The stealth gameplay and old-school ninja atmosphere really caught my attention, and now I'm curious to eventually experience the game for myself.

Thousand Arms (PS1)

Released for the original PlayStation in Japan on December 17, 1998, Thousand Arms is a JRPG developed by TOSE, with planning and supervision by Red Company, and published by Atlus. The game follows Meis Triumph, a young Spirit Blacksmith who sets out to become a skilled blacksmith while getting caught up in a conflict involving the Dark Acolytes. What makes Thousand Arms different from the usual JRPG is how it mixes its adventure with a dating system, where building relationships with the game's female characters is directly connected to Meis's ability to forge stronger weapons and gain new abilities.

The game also stands out for its anime-inspired presentation, fully voiced dialogue, animated sequences, and its unusual combination of RPG and dating-sim mechanics. Character designs were handled by Yuuya Kusaka, while Junki Takegami is credited for the scenario. The relationship system isn't just there for story purposes either, raising a girl's intimacy level can unlock new spells and abilities when Meis forges weapons using her elemental power. Thousand Arms eventually received an English-language release in North America in 1999.

I've actually played Thousand Arms before and had a great time with it, but I never finished my own playthrough. My cousin, though, played the game all the way to the end, so I ended up watching him experience the parts of the game that I never got to. Even though I didn't finish it myself, Thousand Arms is still one of those PS1 RPGs I remember fondly, and it's a game I'd like to properly finish someday.

The Sky Fish soul. 💀🐟

You can't stop this thing, but you can slow it down with the Chronomage soul. Actually getting the timing right is a pain. 😂

Definitely one of the hardest souls to get in Aria of Sorrow.
