What if the words you spoke were enough to preserve a culture? What if your ink could revive a dying language, speak to the hearts of generations, and give birth to something timeless? Panday-Dila 2024 dared to ask this question, shaking the foundations of Kinaray-a writing from the ground up. Hosted in collaboration with Dungug Kinaray-a and TOPS Antique, the workshop became a cauldron of fiery passion and untold stories.

The very essence of Panday-Dila was rooted in the conviction that the Kinaray-a language is more than a medium of communication, it's a vessel for preserving identity, culture, and history. Over the course of two weekends in October, writers from all walks of life came together to reshape the landscape of Kinaray-a literature. With the expert guidance of ๐€๐ฅ๐ž๐ฑ ๐‚. ๐ƒ๐ž๐ฅ๐จ๐ฌ ๐’๐š๐ง๐ญ๐จ๐ฌ, a pioneer in Kinaray-a literature and a relentless champion of its preservation, participants explored the power of style, grammar, diction, and the beauty of poetic verse. They took to the art of writing short stories, plays, and poetry, tapping into the rawest emotions and crafting narratives that would resonate for generations.

And the results? Remarkable. Panday-Dila writers poured their hearts into their work, breathing life into their mother tongue. Take ๐€๐ง๐ ๐ž๐ฅ ๐‡๐จ๐ฉ๐ž ๐ƒ๐ฎ๐ง๐ ๐ ๐š๐ง๐จ๐งโ€™๐ฌ heartfelt poem โ€œ๐‡๐ฎ๐ฌ๐š๐ฒ ๐๐ข ๐๐š๐ง๐š๐ฒ,โ€ for instance. The simplicity of a motherโ€™s love was captured in every line, as Dungganon reminisced about the hands that cared for her, shaping her with every touch. Meanwhile, ๐‹๐ž๐ข๐ ๐ก ๐•๐š๐œ๐ข๐จโ€™๐ฌ โ€œ๐‹๐ข๐ฉ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐คโ€ painted a poignant picture of longing, a plea for connection masked under the superficiality of beauty. These pieces were echoes of a generation striving to hold on to something real.

Then there was ๐‚๐ก๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ฉ๐ก๐ž๐ซ ๐๐จ๐ง-๐š๐งโ€™๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ก๐จ๐ซ๐ญ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ โ€œ๐‡๐š๐ง๐๐ฎ๐ฆ ๐๐ ๐š ๐’๐ž๐ฅ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ง,โ€ which reached deep into the soul of rural life. It was a tale of longing and persistence, of a son who dreamed of reconnecting with his mother, not through grand gestures but through the simplest of toolsโ€”a cell phone. In Pon-anโ€™s words, the intersection of modernity and tradition, the tug of familial love against the backdrop of hardship, is where Kinaray-a writing shines its brightest.

As the ink dried and the final critiques were made, the writers left Panday-Dila not just with new skills, but with a renewed sense of purpose. The workshop didnโ€™t just teach them how to write, it reminded them why they write. In a world that constantly shifts and forgets, these writers are the guardians of their language, the warriors wielding words to ensure that Kinaray-a isnโ€™t just spokenโ€”it lives. And that, in itself, is a victory worth celebrating.

They say the eyes are the windows to the soul, but what happens when the view is blocked by a sea of grinning faces and empty promises? This election season, the streets are screaming louder than the candidates themselves, not with speeches or action plans, but with tarpaulins, a flood of fabric and ink that has transformed every corner of our towns into a chaotic gallery of shameless self-promotion.

In the middle of every election, like clockwork, the tarpaulins come out. They flood our surroundings, on every corner, draped over buildings, even on trees โ€”broadcasting candidates' names, their faces, their slogans. They claim to represent a "promise of change," but what are they really promising? What are these giant banners really telling us?

They scream at us with their flashy fonts, oversaturated images, and neon colors. Yet, if you look closely, you realize that underneath all the vibrant chaos, the tarpaulins are doing little more than drowning out the real conversation. Theyโ€™ve become the mask behind which the real problems are hidden. We are fed promises, not of substance, but of style. Politics, at its core, has turned into a game of appearances; who can make the most noise, the most spectacle, rather than who can make the most genuine difference. The tarpaulins have become a metaphor for how weโ€™ve reduced our decisions to surface-level aesthetics: Who looks good in the campaign, whose logo is the brightest, whose face can be plastered across the most places? Itโ€™s not about values anymore, itโ€™s about visibility.

Itโ€™s frustrating. These tarpaulins arenโ€™t just paper and ink, theyโ€™re a declaration of what our society has prioritized: short-term visibility over long-term impact. We, the voters, are bombarded with these monstrous ads and loud promises, but where are the discussions about policies, about the real work that needs to be done? Are we so conditioned by the colors and slogans that we forget to question what lies beneath? The tarpaulin epidemic is a manifestation of our collective failure to demand more.

Ironically, many of these faces staring down at us from these banners have platforms that promise environmental protection and sustainability. Yet, with every tarpaulin they hang, they contradict their own agendas. They litter the landscape with their ambitions, oblivious to the long-term consequences of their short-term visibility. What happens to these materials once the elections are over? They donโ€™t decompose, but maybe thatโ€™s the pointโ€”a fitting metaphor for the promises that remain unfulfilled.

But letโ€™s not let voters off the hook either. We are complicit. We accept this visual clutter as part of the spectacle, as if elections are a carnival, not a solemn process of choosing the leaders who will shape our future. We passively tolerate this abuse of public spaces, ignoring the louder cries of the voicelessโ€”those whose issues are drowned out by the noise of this electoral circus.

The tarpaulin epidemic exposes a deeper sickness in our political culture: the obsession with optics over substance. When did we become a nation where leaders believe they can win hearts by winning wall space? When did we settle for faces on fabric instead of real solutions?

As I write this, another tarpaulin is going up somewhere, another face smiling down at us as if to say, โ€œIโ€™m here, and Iโ€™m important.โ€ But hereโ€™s the thing: importance isnโ€™t measured by the size of a tarpaulin, but by the depth of impact a leader leaves behind. So, to the candidates: If your platform were strong enough, would you even need a tarpaulin to remind us who you are?

And to us voters: When the winds blow the tarpaulins away, what will remain? Will we remember the faces, or will we still be searching for the leaders?
