“Agapito might be short in length but it is vast in feeling.”

Director-General Paolo Villaluna expressed this during the Film Academy's live announcement last Sunday that Agapito will get government support as it seeks consideration for the Best Live Action Short Film category of the 99th Academy Awards.

Villaluna describes Arvin Alindogan Belarmino and Kyla Danelle Romero's Agapito as a film marked by “cinematic precision,” with “space, labor, bodies, and time arranged with tenderness instead of pity.”

The Philippines on Sunday, Sept. 13, has selected "Filipiñana" for Best International Feature Film, "58th" for Best Documentary Feature, and "Agapito" for Best Live-Action Short Film at the 99th Academy Awards or Oscars.

Film Academy of the Philippines Director General Paolo Villaluna made the announcement during the oath-taking ceremony of LENTE, a newly formed guild of entertainment journalists under the organization.

The FAP postponed the announcement of the country's official Oscar entries, initially scheduled for Sept. 4.

"Filipiñana," written and directed by Rafael Manuel, follows 17-year-old Isabel, an Ilokana tee-girl working at an elite golf and country club outside Manila. The film explores the social divisions and power dynamics within the exclusive club. It is produced by Jeremy Chua, Alex Polunin, Bianca Balbuena, Bradley Liew, Nadia Turincev, Omar El Kadi, and Manuel. The project is executive produced by Film4, Nathan Studios, and Happy Infinite Productions.

"58th," directed by Carl Joseph Papa and produced by Nessa Valdellon, is an animated documentary-drama about the 2009 Maguindanao massacre. It follows photojournalist Reynaldo “Bebot” Momay, whose remains were never found and who was identified as the 58th victim of the massacre, through the perspective of his daughter.

"Agapito," directed by Arvin Belarmino and Kyla Danelle Romero and produced by Jon Galvez, Carlos Ortiz, and Mick Quito, is a short film set in a fading duckpin bowling alley. The 15-minute film follows its pin setters on the last day of the month as they prepare for the arrival of a special visitor. It premiered in competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

Under Academy rules, "Filipiñana" is the Philippines’ official selection for Best International Feature Film, a category where countries submit one film through an Academy-approved national selection committee.

Best Documentary Feature and Best Live-Action Short Film have different eligibility rules. For both categories, films can qualify through a paid theatrical release in one of six qualifying U.S. metropolitan areas or by winning a qualifying award at a competitive film festival. Documentary features can also qualify through the International Feature Film route, while live-action shorts can qualify by winning a Gold, Silver, or Bronze Medal in the Academy’s 2026 Student Academy Awards competition in the Narrative or Alternative/Experimental categories.

In the country's case, "58th" won the Facing the Edge Award at the 2026 Doc Edge Festival in New Zealand, while "Agapito" was selected for the Short Film Competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

The FAP said it will support “58th” and “Agapito” in terms of funding and promotion in their respective categories.

The 99th Academy Awards are scheduled for March 14, 2027. The Philippines has yet to win the Best International Feature Film award.

Last year, the country submitted Lav Diaz’s "Magellan" for the 98th Academy Awards, but the film failed to advance to the Academy’s official shortlist.
