Kaycie Elisha Patilla, a Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English student, has brought pride and honor to the Polytechnic University of the Philippinesโ€“San Pedro Campus after winning First Place in the Poster Making Contest of the 5th ASEAN International Student Competitions 2025 University-Level Final Round, October 10.

Patilla will advance to represent the university in the International Round on November 18, showcasing not only her creativity but also the excellence and talent of PUPians.

She reflected this yearโ€™s theme, โ€œInnovate for Impact: Youth Solutions for Resilient and Inclusive ASEAN,โ€ through her artwork titled โ€œPassing the Baton.โ€

โ€œThe central element of my poster includes two hands passing a baton, much like in a relay race. In a relay, you cannot win aloneโ€”you have to pass the baton to the other players. In the same way, smart and sustainable cities can be achieved through collaborations across generations,โ€ Patilla explained during her poster presentation via Zoom.

We are so proud of you, PUPian. Best of luck!

Polytechnic University of the Philippines - San Pedro Campus (PUP SPC) Central Student Council (CSC) conducts Leadership Training Symposium 2025 with the theme, โ€œIgniting the Leader Within,โ€ enjoined by various student organizations from both academic and non-academic sectors for a day of learning, inspiration, and unity.

The event commenced at 9:50 AM, highlighting the spirit of collaboration among academic organizations โ€” Explorers in Communication and Information Technology (EXPLICIT), Junior Executive Marketing Management Association (JEMMA), Guild of English Majors (GEMs), Junior People Management Association of the Philippines (JPMAP),
Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA), Young Entrepreneurs Society (YES), and Society of Math Educators (SME) โ€” and non-academic and cultural groups including Lighthouse of Innovation and Knowledge for Hopeful Authors (LIKHA), Debate Society, Sports Development, Authorized Regiments and Marshalls at Service (ARMS), Dulaang Oyayi Theater Arts (DOTA), Sampaguita Chorale, Multimedia Arts and Information Association (MAIA), Campus Star, and Bridging Active Responsiveness and Gender Development Association (BARGADA).

The program opened with a solemn rendition of the Lupang Hinirang and a prayer led by the Sampaguita Chorale, setting a reflective tone for the day.

Ms. Cristmell Subiaga, CSC President delivered the opening remarks, reminding the audience that โ€œit is the day to rediscover what it truly means to be a leader,โ€ emphasizing that leadership is not about authority alone but about service and purpose.

The first keynote speaker, Divine Marie Santos, captivated the audience with her talk titled โ€œEquilibrium of Leadership: Leading with Brilliance and Purpose.โ€ She encouraged student leaders to seek balance between responsibilities, relationships, and self-care, quoting, โ€œHow can you help others when youโ€™re not helping yourself?โ€

She likened leadership to economic equilibrium, where demand and supply must align โ€” reminding everyone that leadership requires both giving to others and nurturing oneself.

โ€œA leader with authority commands attention; a leader with empathy earns trust,โ€ she said.

Ms. Santos further inspired the students with her words: โ€œA true student leader doesnโ€™t just survive the workloadโ€”they grow through it.โ€

Adding to the energy, Hiyas, the universityโ€™s cultural dance troupe, set the stage ablaze with a fiery red-themed performance filled with swag, rhythm, and passion โ€” earning loud cheers as one of the best cultural highlights of the morning.

The second keynote speaker, James Alzona, continued the momentum with his powerful talk titled โ€œIgniting Through Growth, Service, and Impact: The Leadership Fire.โ€

He challenged the audience to reflect on their purpose, asking, โ€œBakit kayo nandito?โ€ and reminded them that โ€œTrue leadership is an action โ€” a conscious choice made every single day.โ€

Alzona introduced the Three Pillars of Leadership โ€” Growth, Service, and Impact as he reminded student leaders that no one is perfect and that growth begins with embracing mistakes, managing energy, and caring for oneself.

Moreover, he emphasized that true leadership is defined not by titles but by service โ€” by listening, enabling others, and leading by example.

Lastly, he urged everyone to create a lasting impact by inspiring and building others, saying that great leaders grow to improve themselves, serve to uplift others, and strive to leave a meaningful legacy.

He left a lasting impression, declaring, โ€œThe future of your university โ€” and perhaps even your community โ€” rests not on the shoulders of giants but in the actions of committed student leaders like you. Donโ€™t wait for permission. The time to ignite your leadership is now.โ€

Following the talks, guest speakers were recognized for their outstanding speeches before the SME team claimed victory in the exciting icebreaker game โ€œBato-Bato Pics.โ€

The second half featured lively presentations from various non-academic and academic organizations, showcasing each groupโ€™s creativity, advocacy, and commitment to holistic student development.

From DOTAโ€™s โ€œMagwawagi ang Katotohananโ€ to introduction of non-academic organization presidents, talking about what they advocate and what they represent about.

Meanwhile, during the long table discussion, organizations reflected on their progress and shared insights on transforming competition into collaboration.

The consensus was clear โ€” competition, when guided by respect and passion, fuels shared growth.

The eventโ€™s team-building activities sparked laughter and camaraderie among the participants.

Each team carried symbolic color themes โ€” from Red (Mabaya) to Purple (Love-Bender) โ€” representing the many facets of leadership.

Fun-filled games like โ€œBlow Me Upโ€ and โ€œSack Race Reversedโ€ kept the energy high throughout the afternoon.

In the awarding ceremony, all participating organizations were honored for their active involvement as the Brown Team (Brownies) dominated the competition, winning Best in Banner Making, Best in Yell Making, and the title of Overall Champion.

Meanwhile, the Purple Team (Love-Benders) was hailed as the Most Participative Group.

As the day concluded, the CSC Vice President for Internals, Mr. Reniel Loprez delivered a heartfelt closing message, expressing gratitude to all who made the event possible and reminding everyone that leadership is a continuous journey fueled by passion, empathy, and service.

Lao Tzuโ€™s words, though written thousands of years ago, mirror todayโ€™s struggle in the Philippines about the latest revelations on anomalous flood-control projects. What failed is not just the infrastructures but also the political and economic system that allowed taxpayer's money to be looted while millions of Filipinos remain vulnerable to catastrophes.

From mid-2022 to mid-2025, the Marcos administration allocated 545 billion to 9,855 flood-control projects. Yet the floods continue to wreak havoc on the country from Luzon to Mindanao. While the intended use of the money was to ensure a permanent flood solution, it ended up in the hands and pockets of multiple contractors, politicians, and public officials.

The faces involved in this scandal are as brazen as the scheme itself. The construction companies of the Discayas, cornered at least P25.2 billion in contracts. These profit-driven deals funded the extravagant lifestyle of the couple which they shamelessly flaunted. They showed off their wealth by living in a mansion with crystal chandeliers and a garage with more than 40 luxury cars that is worth hundreds of millions. Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto himself has flagged even more firms tied to the family that ups the total haul to P31 billion โ€“ bigger than Ayala Landโ€™s annual revenues.

The Co family of Bicol which is both politically and economically influential was able to get billions worth of contracts while relatives occupied powerful positions in Congress including the appropriations committee. Senator Panfilo Lacson said that legislators, DPWH officials, auditors, and their intermediaries get as much as 60% of the funds for infrastructure projects as kickbacks. At least 18 house members have links to companies that bagged flood control contracts.

Meanwhile, the quality of these projects is as questionable as the integrity of their procurement. Many contractors with a poor rating or unsatisfactory work in the Construction Performance Evaluation System still secured new contracts. Some of them are still facing tax investigations and graft cases but still show up in flood-control contracts.

All this would be outrageous enough if the money were merely wasted. However, the real tragedy is that entire communities are paying the price, especially the poorest and least protected families. This scandal cuts deeper than politics. It describes lives that could have been saved, floods that could have been prevented, farmers whose crops get washed away, and children having to wade through waist-deep waters to get to school or worse, not go at all. Each luxury car parked inside Discaya's garage and each luxury item that belongs to Claudine Co signifies a classroom that is not built, an embankment not constructed, and evacuation centers completely emptied.

Filipinos call for more than just arrests and prosecutions but full restitution of misappropriated public funds. All people responsible should have their bank accounts freezed, properties seized, and ill-gotten wealth confiscated. Only then can these billions be redirected to their rightful purpose. However, justice cannot be partial. The Marcos administration's response to this controversy appears to be biased and selective, which only perpetuates corruption rather than address it.

But recovery isn't enough, systemic reform is what we need. The involvement of some members of the house requires independent entities to monitor these matters. Nevertheless, as long as political dynasties continue to dominate our institutions, real systemic reform will be an empty dream. The corruption cycle continues because power is inherited rather than earned. The Marcos administration itself is a testament of how nepotism breeds impunity.

What is happening in the Philippines today is a man-made disaster and its cure lies in courage. Courage to hold the powerful accountable. Courage to reclaim the billions that were stolen. Courage to restore faith that the government can truly protect its people. Anything less will just put a pause and not a stop to it.

We've been drowned by greed long enough; only collective outrage can turn the tide.

Filipinos in general are talented people, these talents are highly recognised by the people in music like Lea Salonga, Apl De Ap and dance industry like Urban Crew, the pageant industry Catriona Gray, Pia Wurtzbach, and Megan Young, and so many more.

This time the victories that we will celebrate are the winner of America's Got Talent Season 20, Mr International, and the winner of Project Runway, who gave the Philippines honor in representing not only the country but also their dreams and aspirations throughout the years of failures and setbacks they faced.

Jessica Sanchez, the winner of the 20th season of Americaโ€™s Got Talent, had a long journey before she snatched the win for the talent showโ€™s 20th season. She said that she was in the first season of Americaโ€™s Got Talent in 2006, and she got through the semi-finals. When asked by Simon Cowell about what happened after that, she said that โ€œI kind of fell out of love with music because I was really young, and I was so swayed by what everyone wanted me to be, and so, you know, maybe it
took me maybe 20 years, but I know exactly who I am, and I know exactly what I want, and I am excited to be back.โ€ As this season is going, she is pregnant with her first baby, and by the time of the grand finals, she was already 9 months pregnantโ€”making her victory even more inspiring.

In her audition she sang โ€œBeautiful Thingsโ€ by Benson Boone, for which she got a golden buzzer from Sofia Vergara because of her powerful performance that day, which made her go directly to the quarter finals.

In the quarter-finals of the said competition, she sang โ€œOrdinaryโ€ by Alex Warren. In the semi-finals, she sang โ€œGolden Hourโ€ by JVKE. And for the Grand Finals she sang a hit song collaboration of Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars, โ€œDie with a Smileโ€, which gave her the win. During this performance, Mel B. praised her, saying โ€œI feel like every time we see you, you kind of bring us into your world more and more.โ€ Meanwhile, Howie Mandel declared, โ€œSo far, this is the best act of the night.โ€ For the Final Duet she sang โ€œGolden Hourโ€ with Sirca Marea.

Veejay Floresca, the winner of season 21 of Project Runway, an American reality television show which focuses on fashion design. Veejay Floresca, a Filipino Fashion designer who is now based in the United States shared that "I was just a little gay boy in the Philippines watching the show, and I've always been wanting to do this.โ€ She idolizes the returning host for this season Heidi Klum. According to her, she wants to be the first transwoman to be a winner in this competition. She first joined Project Runway when it had a franchise here in the Philippines where she came in third place. For this season, Floresca impressed the judges with her collection entitled โ€˜A Beautiful Momentโ€™, which she named after a movie she and her father used to watch together, making the showcase both personal and memorable.

While her victory was celebrated, the season also drew buzz online over her occasional on-screen clashes with fellow contestants, particularly the Twin designers Jesus and Anthony Estrada. These moments became part of the showโ€™s reality-TV drama, but did not take away from Florescaโ€™s achievement of being the first Filipina transwoman to win the competition.

Kirk Bondad, Mr. International 2025, the pageant started in 2006, by Singaporean Alan Sim, and run by the Mister International Organization (MIO). In the pageant Mr. Bondad showed the world not only his perfectly fit body but his unparalleled wits in the question and answer portion. In the first round he answered the question: "In an era of fake news and misinformation, why is critical thinking important for the survival of democracy?". He answered: "I think that topic is a very timely matter because social media is acting as a double-edged sword -- it can divide, but it can also unite. And one thing, especially now [that is] very prevalent, that you can see everywhere is that fake news is spreading."
"And I think critical thinking gives us the ability to see what truly matters. Because at the end of the day, every step counts. And if we can work together as humanity, we can progress in this world, and we can move forward to peace and progress."
And for the final question and answer when asked about "If you win Mister International and you are invited to speak at the United Nations, what one social or political issue would you choose to highlight and why?" He focused on children, which he remarked โ€œwe need to protect them and give them a chance. He also remarked "Because todayโ€™s children will be tomorrow's leaders. Because ultimately, I believe if we can collectively do the right decisions, even in small steps, we will do a big impact internationally.โ€

Bondad was considered a strong frontliner throughout the competition, consistently earning attention for both his stage presence and his answers. During the preliminaries he secured a spot in the Top 3 of Mister Internationalโ€™s Peopleโ€™s Choice Contest. He also drew praise paying homage to the Philippines through his national costume, which highlighted his pride through his roots. Ahead of his Mister International triumph, Bondad has already built his credentials by competing for the Philippines at Mr, World 2024, where he landed among the Top 20 finishers.

Shortly after his win as the Mr. International he is asked how he feel he said that โ€œ one of the happiest people on earth right now," this victory is much more pleasant because his parents are present in his competition. He is also thanking his friends for their support in his journey.
