Despite global efforts to reduce poverty, countless families continue to face social exclusion, institutional neglect, and unjust systems that fail to uphold their rights. Every October 17, the world marks the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty to confront these challenges, reaffirming that poverty is a violation of human rights and providing a platform for the voices of those most affected to be heard.
As the world navigates the unequal recovery from recent global crises, the theme “Ending Social and Institutional Maltreatment: Ensuring Respect and Effective Support for Families Living in Poverty” serves as an urgent and necessary guide. It acknowledges that poverty is not only about a lack of income, but also about dignity, justice, and belonging. Governments, institutions, and communities should confront systemic maltreatment and build support systems rooted in trust and respect to empower the impoverished to shape their own futures and live with dignity.
