The "Galingan Nga Bato" is consist of two cylindrical shaped carved stones, one placed on top of the other which is made by our ancestors and is traditionally used in grinding corn. The top stone is circular and is pressed against the bottom stone to grind the corn into smaller grains, it involves applying circular force to create pressure effectively. After grinding, the corn is strained using the "aryagan," a tool made from crafted bamboo, separating larger grains from the smaller ones for finer cornmeal.
This ancient method serves various community functions, from mixing with rice for human consumption especially during times when rice is scarce, to feeding young animals, contributing to household sustenance. With historical significance dating back to the 1940s, the "Galingan Nga Bato" is a heirloom that represents knowledge and skills passed down through generation, now preserved by Violeta "Akay" Ca-aya inherited from her parents. It stands as a testament to the family's commitment to their cultural heritage, ensuring its continuity by teaching younger generations about its use and importance.
Moreover, the act of grinding corn with the "Galingan nga bato" goes beyond practicality, becoming a meaningful way for the community to connect with their past. Engaging in this laborious task prompts shared reminiscence of past memories, bridging generational gaps. Through the shared experience of labor and storytelling, individuals gain a deeper understanding of life's challenges and triumphs, turning the act of grinding corn into a metaphor for life itself requires effort, patience, and perseverance.
Despite the task's difficulty, they find joy in the shared work and the opportunity to connect. The wisdom shared by Lola "Akay", "amon sang-una, pagtapos galingon mais, buslugan hal-o ang paray kag tig-angon", resonates deeply, emphasizing the impact of these moments. As she looks up to her granddaughter, she's hoping that this treasure will be preserved and used until the future generations. This serves as a reminder of the beauty found in simple yet meaningful activities, highlighting the importance of cherishing traditions, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering connections among people.
