As heavy rain pours, some students celebrate cozy days and class suspensions, while others cling to their rooftops, waiting for help, hoping the typhoon ends. This stark contrast reveals the line between comfort and crisis.

While many learners post on social media about late-night movie marathons and how calming the rain is, the reality outside their windows tells a different storyโ€”one that some people fail to see. The so-called 'calm rain' is flooding streets, destroying homes, and drowning lives.

In places like lower Antipolo and even some parts of upper Antipolo, floodwaters rose rapidly overnight, leaving homes submerged and belongings floating in water.

โ€œWe didnโ€™t have time to prepare for the flood,โ€ said one student.
โ€œSome of our valuables are now gone,โ€ added another.

Meanwhile, in higher areas like upper Antipolo, the risk of flooding is lower. Some students experience the storm merely as an unexpected break.

โ€œYes, there are a lot of tasks given to us, but I can just do them later and relax for a while,โ€ said a student.

Four out of five students agree: the difference in experience isnโ€™t just about location. Itโ€™s also about privilege. Access to safe housing, working drainage systems, and basic emergency resources like med kits or go bags is important in determining whether a typhoon brings rest or ruin.

As the rain continues to fall, the nation is reminded that not all students are sheltered equally. Not everyone has the time or space to focus on school tasks. For some, the storm brought rest. For others, it brought fear and somehow... trauma.

With each passing year, typhoons devastate homes and challenge the resilience of people in the nation. Heavy rains flood houses, saturate foundation, and cause water damage that ruins furniture, appliances, and personal belongings. For many, the emotional toll is just as severe, imagine the fear of losing everything, the stress of rebuilding, and the uncertainty of when the next storm will strike.

As the Tropical Storm โ€œCrisingโ€ and โ€œDanteโ€ lashes in some part of MIMAROPA, Region 9, CALABARZON, and other areas across the country, the entire communities are once again disrupted as the roads become impassable, suspended classes, rivers swelling rapidly, and reports of landslides and floods have begun to emerge.

Having a typhoon-proof community goes beyond reinforcing individual structures, it requires a comprehensive and integrated approach. Reimagine how entire neighborhoods function in the face of nature, that is how you start a plan.

To bring this vision to life, several strategies must be implemented:

โ€ขInfrastructure Resilience - incorporate concrete structures that can withstand any type of disaster.
โ€ขCommunity Preparedness - conduct regular disaster drills in the community.
โ€ขRisk Mapping and Hazard Assessment - identify high-risk areas.
โ€ขEnvironmental Restoration - to absorb storm surge, floods, and lower the risk of landslides.

To truly protect lives and eliminate relentless threats brought by the destructive typhoon, let this be a reminder that disaster recovery alone is not enough, the preparedness and prevention are what truly save lives.

Education is important, but survival and well-being should come first. In this time of calamities, asking the question of โ€œHow can I submit this? โ€ should not be crossing studentsโ€™ minds. Do students genuinely need to decide between battling through flood waters or succumbing to academic pressure?

Frequent class suspensions can indeed result in students' learning loss, and it is a pressing issue. Hence, it must be handled more efficiently than strapping students with excessive assignments that add to their already full plates.

It is disconcerting when the submission of schoolwork bothers them more than their own survival. โ€œStudy hard to have a better life,โ€ they said, but what betterment are we aiming for if we will just lose it along the way?

In response, the Department of Education is committed to balancing the need to learn with the health, safety, and well-being of each Filipino learner. When disasters occur, the assessment of the academic workload must be reassessed and adjusted accordingly. Lessons are not a priority for students when their home is underwater, the power is cut, or when the family is unsettled.

With this, teachers are doing their best to provide a reasonable workload that is purposeful, and missed lesson activities that do not add to the burden during the recovery phase.

While there are class suspensions issued for protecting lives, the learning process is not suspended. The Department advocates for flexible learning pathways such as modular, asynchronous, and self-paced so students can manage their learning through their preferred schedule. As former DepEd Secretary, Leonor Briones once affirmed, 'Education must continue. Education must never stop.'

Class suspensions used to feel like a mini vacation for us, until it didnโ€™t. Now, it feels more like a reset button that seems to not work. The rain pours, the wind howls, and instead of resting, weโ€™re just... waiting. Waiting for the next sets of lessons, the next wave of asynchronous tasks, or the next notice that says, โ€œSince classes are suspended, here are new set of activities to be sunmitted.โ€ But in between all the noises on our inboxes and outside our houses, there are these weirdly comforting moments. Like syncing Netflix episodes with your friend over chat just to feel a little less alone, or finally getting your Wi-Fi back after it ghosted you for somewhat two days straight. Theyโ€™re small wins, but in weeks like these? Small wins are gold wins.

And maybe thatโ€™s what these rainy days are teaching us... how to romanticize the slow, the quiet, and the in-between. Because when youโ€™re stuck at home with deadlines and the roof starts dripping again, you find joy in the soft stuff: brewing 3-in-1 coffee like a ritual, wrapping yourself in blankets like youโ€™re the main character in a sad indie film, or playing the same sad playlist for the fourth time while answering your reflection papers about "resilience." Thereโ€™s something oddly healing about that. Like you're all struggling, but also learning how to stretch comfort out of the natural chaos. You rest in short bursts, scroll for distractions, and sometimes even manage to finish one task and feel like you deserve an award, which in fact, you really do

And yet, in all this; between blackouts, flooded barangays, and inboxes full of workloads, you continue to move. Quietly, gently, together. Even teachers, caught in the same rain, the same storm, keep showing up for us, through voice notes, online meetings, and late-night check-ins. Thereโ€™s no viral headline for these everyday acts of care, no medal for showing up in the middle of a storm. But still, they happen between every noises. Because in this country, hope is rarely loud. Itโ€™s often soaked, tired, unannounced, but in the most unexpected way, it shows up. In shared umbrellas, in backup plans, even in the way we keep choosing to carry each other, even when weโ€™re all drenched.

And if you're reading this while feeling tired, behind schedule, or halfway through a task you barely understandโ€”you have to breathe. You're not falling behind. You're surviving a storm, and that alone is more than enough today.

In an era where everyone could be a โ€œjournalistโ€ by uploading information online and influencing the public, is everyone brave enough to do what it takes to be a true journalist?

The vast and ever-expanding power of social media is undeniably affecting us, whether we like it or not, especially in information dissemination. Journalism had not been spared in this drastic change; even the long-standing industry of delivering news had been modernized.

With the internet being accessible to almost everyone, this provides them the power to share news through scoops and posts online. This now sparked debates of whether journalists are still relevant today. Or can โ€˜vloggersโ€™ take their position in information dissemination?

People sharing information online is actually good in general, considering that everyone could take part in sharing news to inform others of what is happening in our society. But to compare these to what professional journalists encounter in their fields is just erroneous, as it undermines the real effort and obstacles that these reporters have to overcome just to deliver quality news to the mass public.

It is crucial to understand that the role of journalists in society is not limited to spreading news but also to being a moral compass of the society, a guiding light that illuminates the darkest paths, even when no one dares to.

Facing strong storms while drenched in floods, strong rushing of water and mud, rocks and debris falling with thuds, and even covering hideous crimes that could put their lives in danger are just some of the risks that these journalists withstand in pursuit of truth and justice.

Next time we lie in our comfortable beds, enjoying the warmth of our blankets, and possibly sipping a good hot coffee, letโ€™s remember that there are journalists out there that are risking their lives for their sworn duty.

They did not just take the stage at Quirino Grandstand, they arrived with stories in their bodies, heritage in their movement, and the kind of discipline that doesnโ€™t need to announce itself to be known.

The Festival Day Competition is just one of the major events in the celebration of Parada ng Kalayaan, Official Philippine Independence Day celebration created by the Office of the President and partner national agencies. The event, which was on June 12, 2025, at the Quirino Grandstand, garnered cultural dance troupes from every corner of the nation, from every region, city, or municipality. With national pride on the line, each group was tasked to present a piece that reflects Filipino culture, creativity, and heritage.

The Maharlika Dance Troupe of San Jose National High School performed not for applause, but for memory, for Antipolo, for identity, and for the pieces of our culture that continue to live through the youth.

They carried the message of our ancestry, of our identity, of everything that refuses to be forgotten. And when the music stopped, they had earned more than applause. They earned the countryโ€™s gaze, and 2nd Runner-Up in the national Festival Performance Competition of the Parada ng Kalayaan 2025.

And someone in the crowd recognized that.

Councilor LJ Sumulong III recognized that. He didnโ€™t just applaud their success, he acted on it. Through a formal resolution, he made sure Maharlikaโ€™s win was not just celebrated but remembered, officially and publicly.

Because for him, it wasnโ€™t just about a placement in a competition. It was about what the win stood for: hard work, culture, and community pride. A message to every young Antipoleรฑo that their passion matters.

This wasnโ€™t just Maharlikaโ€™s win.
It was ours.

Before the President. Before the country. They danced, and in doing so, they carried the city on their shoulders.

TEENDIG spearheaded the symposium in San Jose National High School's covered court, July 11.

Class presidents of every section from grades 7-12, both Junior and Senior High School including those who are interested in health, are gathered in the covered court of SJNHS to attend the symposium.

Ma'am Xyza Espiritu, TEENDIG Coordinator, stated, "Ang TEENDIG ay kaibigan nyo," implying that the said program is a haven for all and always open for everyone.

When asked, "Bakit sa tingin nyo mga students gaya nyo ang kasama nyo?" one participant answered, "Kabataan para sa kabataan, sino pa bang lubos na mas makakaintindi sa atin kundi tayong mga kabataan din?" Highlighting the importance of peer-to-peer education.

Along with TEENDIG, ALPAS Club officers also joined to share their knowledge about physical health, mental health, emotional health, and spiritual health.

Airish Llanes, officer of ALPAS Club, introduces 'malayaako.ph,' a youth website designed to support teens during puberty and adolescence. It is jam-packed with information about puberty, mental health, sexual health, relationships, SOGIESC (sexual orientation and gender identity), and more.

Kymberly Delina tackled Teendig 101 while also covering teen health. Teody Malaki explained the roles of Peer Navigator and Peer Educator.

Meanwhile, mental health had been the focus of Stephanie Antolin's discussion, followed by the topic of bullying by Keith Aranez.

Another heavy issue is teenage pregnancy, carefully delivered by Nicole Aguilar and Lady Zamantha Binlayo.

STIs, HIV, and AIDS are often overlooked but still prevalent. Treated as a taboo to be talked about. But Vince Matthew Birco stated that it's time to break the stigma and be open-minded to understand the issue deeper.
