As heavy rain pours, some students celebrate cozy days and class suspensions, while others cling to their rooftops, waiting for help, hoping the typhoon ends. This stark contrast reveals the line between comfort and crisis.
While many learners post on social media about late-night movie marathons and how calming the rain is, the reality outside their windows tells a different storyโone that some people fail to see. The so-called 'calm rain' is flooding streets, destroying homes, and drowning lives.
In places like lower Antipolo and even some parts of upper Antipolo, floodwaters rose rapidly overnight, leaving homes submerged and belongings floating in water.
โWe didnโt have time to prepare for the flood,โ said one student.
โSome of our valuables are now gone,โ added another.
Meanwhile, in higher areas like upper Antipolo, the risk of flooding is lower. Some students experience the storm merely as an unexpected break.
โYes, there are a lot of tasks given to us, but I can just do them later and relax for a while,โ said a student.
Four out of five students agree: the difference in experience isnโt just about location. Itโs also about privilege. Access to safe housing, working drainage systems, and basic emergency resources like med kits or go bags is important in determining whether a typhoon brings rest or ruin.
As the rain continues to fall, the nation is reminded that not all students are sheltered equally. Not everyone has the time or space to focus on school tasks. For some, the storm brought rest. For others, it brought fear and somehow... trauma.
