𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦│NORSU-Siaton Criminology Students Engage in Live Fire Exercise at Bayawan Firing Range
The College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) of Negros Oriental State University – Siaton Campus successfully conducted a Practical Marksmanship and Combat Shooting activity on June 26, 2025, at the NORSU Bayawan City Firing Range, situated within the Bayawan-Sta. Catalina Campus (NORSU-BSC).
A total of 68 second-year BS Criminology students, officially enrolled in the course DEFTACT 201, took part in the activity designed to develop their competencies in safe, responsible, and professional firearm handling—skills vital for law enforcement careers.
The group assembled at 6:00 AM at the Siaton Campus for a pre-departure briefing, safety reminders, and verification of participation documents. After a final headcount, they departed at 6:30 AM aboard the NORSU university bus, arriving at NORSU-BSC at approximately 8:00 AM.
They were accompanied and supervised by faculty chaperones: Mr. Ben John I. Laquinon, CCJE Dean and Activity Coordinator; Jasmin B. Vincoy, Cyndi Clyde D. Archival, Marra Mae P. Loreto, Rodolfo G. Samson Jr., and Vivian R. Jabierto. Also present was Ms. Charity Jereza, Assistant Director for Student Affairs, who showed strong support for the activity and even took part in the firing exercises.
A comprehensive safety orientation was conducted by Mr. Jonas Gako, a registered firing range instructor and licensed professional affiliated with the local gun club that facilitated the live-fire training. He emphasized range discipline, safety procedures, and responsible weapon handling.
The firing activity commenced shortly after and ran smoothly under the close supervision of the instructors and chaperones. Students took turns firing a variety of fi****ms and calibers, practicing stances, trigger discipline, and basic marksmanship. Several faculty and guests were also fired during the controlled session.
By 11:30 AM, the activity concluded with a debriefing and participant accounting, followed by lunch at the NORSU-BSC grounds. The group departed at 1:00 PM and safely returned to the Siaton Campus by 2:30 PM.
In an interview, Dean Laquinon affirmed that the specific objectives of the activity were successfully achieved. “Our students were able to gain not only technical experience but also a deeper appreciation of the responsibilities that come with firearm use. The activity was in full compliance with CHED standards and supports the development of our students as future criminology professionals,” he said.
The event highlights NORSU’s commitment to quality, practical education and exemplifies how theoretical instruction can be meaningfully integrated with real-world training—ensuring graduates are not only knowledgeable but competent and field-ready.
