Boston Roundhead

Origin and history

19th-century beginnings: The origin story of the Boston Roundhead begins in the 1860s in East Boston.

Undelivered fowl: A trio of Oriental-breed fowl arrived at the docks but went unclaimed for months.
Passed to Ned Gill: A man named John Hardwood eventually paid the shipping fees and gave the birds to his friend Ned Gill. Gill successfully bred and fought the fowl, which were initially known as "Gill Roundheads".

Renamed for their origin: The birds were later renamed Boston Roundheads to reflect their origin in Boston.

Reputable breeders: The bloodline was carefully maintained and refined by respected breeders throughout the 20th century, including M.J. Bowen and Greg Galey, solidifying its legacy in gamefowl history.

Key characteristics
Appearance:
Head: Known for a distinctly rounder head shape compared to more triangular-headed Western fowl, due to their Oriental heritage.

Comb: Typically pea-combed, though some variations have straight combs.

Eyes: Often possess fiery red eyes.

Legs: Usually have yellow legs, but some variations have white legs.

Feathers: Often medium red with pale yellow or wheaten hackles.

Fighting style:
Aggressive and intelligent: Boston Roundheads are known for being tenacious, aggressive, and intelligent fighters.

Ring generals: They are considered "ring generals" for their agility and ability to adapt their strategy.

Deadly cuts: The breed has superb cutting ability and can deliver powerful, devastating blows.

Side-stepping: They use tactics like side-stepping and weaving to evade their opponent's attacks.

Temperament:
"Never forget or forgive": According to old-time breeders like Bowen, these c***s have a strong memory and will not forget or forgive an opponent who makes them angry.

Breeding:
Boston Roundheads have been crossed with other popular lines, like Sweater and Kelso, to enhance traits like maturity and cutting ability.
