Faith and the 500-peso Myth
๐ข๐ฃ๐๐ก๐๐ข๐ก | Every December, Filipino families gather in faith: faith in family, faith in tradition, and now, faith that 500 pesos is enough for Noche Buena.
In its annual attempt to ensure that Noche Buena is still affordable, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) performs its holiday ritual. They release a budget they insist is โenoughโ for Christmas. This year, Filipinos are challenged to serve a decent Noche Buena with only 500 pesos. This claim quickly drew flak from the massesโnot because the people crave extravagance, rather of how distant the promise is from the reality.
Despite the DTI releasing a Noche Buena price guide, Justine Irish D. Tabile reported in Business World, shows that prices of foods that are staple for Christmas are continuously rising. Market vendors report that meat prices are steadily increasing, especially with Christmas fast approaching, a trend confirmed by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), which notes that the retail price of bone-in fresh pork has risen by 4.66 per cent compared to last year. Additionally, shoppers and lawmakers describe the 500-peso budget as an insult, saying that even the cheapest combination of items such as spaghetti, macaroni salad, ham, and fruit salad adds up to more than that amount in actual supermarkets and markets.
For many, DTIโs price guide only emphasized the gap between the government and reality. โThey are out of touch if this is based on their price guide. The instructions for the price guide even come from them,โ Steven Cua, president of the Philippine Amalgamated Supermarkets Association said. The DTIโs assertion shows how the government underestimates economic hardship and the happiness the season brings to Filipinos.
Yet, some argue that Christmas should not be measured merely by the foods displayed in the table. DTI Secretary Christina Roque herself noted that not everyone wants to celebrate in an extravagant way, some families only focus on small foods and gifts.
However, Antipolo Bishop Ruperto Santos emphasized that Noche Buena is not just an ordinary meal, it is a sacred family gathering. While simplicity can be a personal choice, it should not be treated as a compulsory budget cap imposed on every household.
Every December, Filipino families gather in faith, tradition, and togethernessโnot to stretch 500 pesos into a feast. This year, reality proves it impossible, leaving us with faith and the 500-peso myth.
