“Poke bowls” are actually Hawaiian, not Japanese.
They come from Hawaii, where poke means “to slice/cut.”

Poke bowls are Hawaiian in origin, but they often look like Japanese food because:

1. Ingredients overlap – Poke bowls use raw fish (like tuna or salmon), rice, seaweed, soy sauce, sesame oil, and vegetables. These are also common in Japanese cuisine (think sushi or donburi).

2. Japanese influence in Hawaii – Hawaii has a strong Japanese cultural influence due to immigration history, so local Hawaiian dishes often blend with Japanese flavors.

3. Modern poke bowls – The international versions of poke bowls are usually built like sushi in a bowl: rice + raw fish + toppings (avocado, edamame, wasabi, etc.), which makes people think it’s Japanese.

👉 So while poke is Hawaiian at its core, the style and flavors we see today are often heavily inspired by Japanese cuisine.
