The People of Surigao, through the City Government, officially extended financial support to the Provincial Government of Surigao del Sur to assist in recovery efforts following the onslaught of Tropical Storm Basyang. City Councilor Joshua Geli personally traveled to the province to hand over the โฑ200,000 donation to Governor Johnny Pimentel, who accepted the aid on behalf of the provincial government.
The donation comes in response to the severe impact reported by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO). According to official situational reports, the storm affected approximately 95,670 families, or 359,887 individuals. Heavy rains submerged several villages and cut off vital road networks in the towns of Cantilan, Madrid, Lanuza, Cortes, San Miguel, Bayabas, and Carmen.
The province faces a difficult recovery period, with storm-related economic losses currently estimated at over โฑ1 billion. By providing this immediate financial help, the City Government of Surigao aims to alleviate the hardships faced by its neighbors and help stabilize the regionโs economy.
This initiative reflects the enduring spirit of Bayanihan and the commitment of the City Government to stand in solidarity with nearby provinces during times of calamity.
