MPBL: San Juan stay unscathed in six games, keep hold of solo MPBL lead

San Juan stay unscathed in six games, keep hold of solo MPBL lead

But after six games, even their best were not good enough as the San Juan stayed unscathed. Their latest win over the Parañaque , 81-65, is proof of San Juan’s continuous domination in the MPBL 2019.

Mac Cardona poured in 16 points while Larry Rodriguez added 13 as the San Juan stayed as the only unbeaten team in the tournament and kept solo lead in the 31-team cast of the fastest growing regional amateur basketball league.

San Juan’s 6-0 start is the best start in franchise history.

The San Juan pulled away midway the second period as a Rodriguez lay-up gave his squad a 40-24 advantage, with 3:29 left in the second frame.

But the Paranaque, mostly composed of homegrown talents, refused to throw in the towel right away and rallied in the third period, inching closer to within five, 45-40, as James Abugan capped an 8-2 run.

That was the closest Parañaque could get as the more experienced San Juan team took care of business from there on and handed the Paranaque their fifth loss in seven games.

Following their latest setback, the Patriots dropped to 11th place.

Duterte to Congress: Pass salary increases for gov’t workers

President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday asked Congress to pass a new Salary Standardization Law that will cover the pay increases of government employees including teachers and nurses.

Duterte issued the call before a joint session of Congress for his fourth State of the Nation Address at the Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City.

"I therefore believe that it is now time for Congress to approve a new version of the Salary Standardization Law, ngayon na," Duterte told the lawmakers.

"To the teachers, alam mo dito... who toil and work tirelessly to educate our young, kasali na po dito 'yung hinihingi ninyo," he added.

Last month, Duterte assured public school teachers that his government would raise their salaries, but noted that there are millions of them.

Should this be realized, Duterte said that the pay increase will not be big, but it will be enough.

"Hindi naman masyadong malaki, pero it will tide you over during these hard times, a little bit bigger than before. This is intended to increase the salaries of national government workers including teachers and nurses," he explained.

For her part, Education Secretary Leonor Briones said that raising a teacher's pay by P10,000 a month as proposed by some groups would cost the government P150 billion.

Briones said she has been working with the economic team of the government to find measures to increase the salary of 830,000 teachers.

According to Briones, the fiscal impact of the salary increase should be considered and assessed, and that there is an equity issue in relation to issues of other government personnel that need to be addressed.

Teachers have been asking for a pay hike especially after Congress approved a 100% increase in the base pay of military and other uniformed personnel that took effect last year.

Duterte to third telco: Provide 'fast, reliable' service

ABS-CBN News

Posted at Jul 22 2019 06:10 PM

MANILA -- President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday challenged the country's China-backed third telecommunications player to deliver on its promise of fast and reliable service.

Dito Telecommunity, composed of Davao tycoon Dennis Uy's Udenna Corp and China Telecom, is mounting a challenge to the dominance of PLDT Inc and Globe Telecom.

"I challenge this new player to fulfill its commitment to provide fast and reliable telecommunications services to our people especially in the underserved areas," Duterte said in his fourth State of the Nation Address.

Duterte said there was "no corruption" in Dito, formerly called Mislatel.

"Do not worry about us. There is no corruption at all. I guarantee you, upon the grave of my father, I don’t allow. I do not talk to them, I just say, just do your work and kung maaari, according to what the specifications are required by this government," he said.

Duterte to Pinoys who encounter corrupt officials: 'Slap them,' 'make a scene'
ABS-CBN News
Posted at Jul 22 2019 06:04 PM

MANILA - If you encounter corrupt officials, make a scene.

President Rodrigo Duterte made this call to Filipinos in his 4th State of the Nation Address Monday, saying they should "be assertive" if they encounter corrupt officials.

"Kayo rin kasi sinasabi ko na sa'yo, be assertive. At 'pag kayo hiningan more than the required payment by government, again I'm telling you mag-iskandalo kayo sa opisina," Duterte said.

(I'm telling you, be assertive. And when you are asked for more than the required payment by government, again I'm telling you, make a scene in the office.)

"Make a scene. Sampalin mo 'yang mga y**a na 'yan kasi aabot rin sa akin 'yan," he said.

(Make a scene. Slap that [person] because that report will also reach me.)

Duterte made the remarks as he expressed frustration over still prevalent corruption in government three years into his campaign against abusive civil servants.

The President even gave the public a line they could say when faced with a corrupt official: "...[S]abi ni Duterte that if you extort money from me, I will slap you. At sampalin talaga ninyo. Di na bale magkaaway, I will defend you."

(Duterte said that if you extort money from me, I will slap you. And really slap them. It doesn't matter if this will start a fight, I will defend you.)

He said he has punished corrupt officials at Malacañang Palace, making them eat peso bills.

"And I have done that. Ako magprangka sa inyo. Ako lang presidente na hanggang ngayon nambubugbog ng mga tao. Pinapakain ko ng pera mga y**a na 'yan."

(I will be frank with you. I am the only president who until now beats people. I make them eat bills.)

He told citizens to report corrupt officials through hotline 8888.

"Be sure that it is true, though you are not liable for libel, pero 'wag naman 'yang makasakit ka ng tao na wala namang kasalanan (but don't file a report that would hurt someone who is not guilty)."

He said he would be "unyielding in our reforms to w**d them out," citing how he has "fired and caused the resignation" of more than 100 officials and government appointees without regard to alliances or relationships.

"There is no sacred cow, as the saying goes, in my administration."

He cited the Bureau of Customs, where more than 60 officials were recently relieved over alleged corruption.

Duterte meets with relieved Customs officials, employees
"If I cannot dismiss them for reason of security of tenure, I will allow plantilla positions but report to Congress every day to help me with huge paperwork every day. All of them will go out of the premises of Customs," he said.

Later in his speech, he told of how "corruption exasperates" and "frustrates."

"Let me ask you. When will corruption end? I don't know. I've been in government for almost 35 years now, I'm not singling out myself. It's the entire gamut of our system," the President said.

With supermajority in Congress, Duterte renews pitch to revive death penalty

Arianne Merez, ABS-CBN News

Posted at Jul 22 2019 05:57 PM | Updated as of Jul 22 2019 06:01 PM

MANILA- With his allies dominating Congress, President Rodrigo Duterte renewed his pitch for the revival of death penalty.

During his fourth State of the Nation Address, Duterte asked Congress to reinstate capital punishment for heinous crimes related to drugs and corruption.

“I respectfully request Congress to reinstate the death penalty for heinous crimes related to drugs as well as plunder,” he said.

“We have not risen above and beyond the parochial interest. Our loyalty to family, friends, and tribal kin continue to exact a heavy toll on the programs designed to uplift the poor,” he said, quoting Filipino writer F. Sionil Jose.

The death penalty bill has faced strong opposition from senators of the 17th Congress. The House of Representatives, however, passed the proposed measure.

With Duterte’s candidates dominating the recent midterm elections, the administration could find it easier to pass bills with more support from the Senate.

Duterte has been hoping to reinstate the death penalty in the Philippines, where nearly 80 percent of its population is made up of Catholics, as he wages his war on illegal drugs and pursues an anti-crime campaign.
