In line with its commitment to safeguarding the oceans and serving as stewards of invaluable marine resources, College of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (CFAS) of North Eastern Mindanao State Universityโ€“Lianga Campus (NEMSU-LC) celebrated the Month of the Ocean (MOO) with the theme โ€œSustaining Ocean Health, Sailing a Resilient Nation,โ€ held at the NEMSU-LC Annex Campus, May 20.

Students, faculty, and staff from the allied programs of CFAS, including Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology (BSMB), BS Fisheries (BSFi), and BS Environmental Science (BSES), convened for a motorcade, filling the municipality with unity toward building a more resilient ocean.

In her opening message, Chairperson of the Department of Fisheries, Marine, and Environmental Sciences (DFiMES), Ms. Kris Angeli Sanchez-Delos Reyes welcomed the participants and emphasized the importance of the nationโ€™s commitment to championing marine ecosystems.

โ€œAs an archipelagic country, the Philippines has a deep responsibility to protect its marine ecosystem as the foundation of food security, climate resilience, and national progress,โ€ Ms. de los Reyes said.

In his words of encouragement, CFAS Dean Dr. Fabio Ruaza Jr. reminded everyone that collective efforts can create a positive and transformative impact on the oceans.

โ€œOur small actions, when multiplied by many people, can create waves of positive change for our seas,โ€ Dr. Ruaza stated.

โ€œI invite you to be part of the solution. Protecting our oceans doesnโ€™t always require big actions; small but consistent choices also matter,โ€ Dr. Ruaza added.

On behalf of the OIC Campus Director, Former Assistant Campus Director (ACD) Ms. Faith Villanueva delivered her inspirational message and shared a story about a child and a fisherman, reflecting on how their journey resembles the challenges faced by students.

โ€œThe sea doesnโ€™t reward those who give up easily; it rewards those who are patient, brave, and willing to keep growing, even when they cannot yet see the catch,โ€ Ms. Villanueva emphasized.

โ€œIn many ways, your journey as students is similar. There were moments when the waves of challenges became strong [โ€ฆ]. Despite these struggles, instead of stopping, you kept growing,โ€ she added.

Assistant Campus Director, Associate Professor Ms. Lo**ta Martin, underscored in her message the importance and relevance of celebrating Ocean Month and encouraged students to strive for greater heights and commit themselves to excellence.

โ€œMay this Ocean Month celebration inspire us to work together in protecting our environment, preserving biodiversity, and promoting responsible stewardship of our natural resources,โ€ Ms. Martin uttered.

Meanwhile, certificates for deanโ€™s listers across CFAS programs were presented to students, commending their dedication to their studies and academic excellence.

In his closing remarks, BSFi Program Coordinator Mr. Dominador Bacalso Jr. reminded everyone that MOO fosters the collegeโ€™s responsibility to protect marine resources and lead the nation toward a sustainable future.

โ€œThis gathering strengthens our commitment to protect, conserve, and wisely manage our marine resources for the generations to come,โ€ Mr. Bacalso said.

โ€œLet us leave today not just inspired, but challenged to become the voice for the ocean, the hands for conservation, and the compass that guides our nation toward sustainability,โ€ he added.

Moreover, the two-day Ocean Month celebration will take place on May 20โ€“21, featuring simultaneous activities for Day 1, including Booth Display, Food Expo, GEC Culmination, LYFP Election, Research Congress, Kayak Competition, Quiz Bowl, and Fish Health Culmination, while the Mangrove and Coastal Clean-Up and Mangrove Tree Planting activities will take place on Day 2. | Report by Jeszyrus Plaza

Serving as a platform for student candidates to present their platforms, advocacies, and vision, Commission on Student Election (COMSELEC) of North Eastern Mindanao State Universityโ€“Lianga Campus (NEMSU-LC) commenced the annual Miting de Avance for the upcoming Eleksyon 2026 at the New Academic Building Lounge on May 19.

Serving as a platform for transparency and open communication, the Miting de Avance allowed candidates to engage with the student electorate.

Student candidates shared their ideals and aspirations for the universityโ€™s future, particularly in relation to campus development, student welfare, and transparency in the management of student funds.

Through the presentation of their platforms and advocacies, students convened to evaluate the candidates as the aspirants answered questions during a timed Q&A portion that tested their principles and leadership capabilities.

University Student Government (USG) Adviser Dr. Ailyn Grace Buquid emphasized the huge responsibility of being a student leader and stressed the need for candidates to be prepared for the challenges that come with leadership.

โ€œLeadership is not as hard as the acacia tree, but as resilient as bamboo grass. You have to sometimes bend and come back strong,โ€ Dr. Buquid expressed.

Further, the two presidential candidatesโ€”Jefferson Lumigon from Sakses and Romnick Ramacula from Padayon Partyโ€”shared their ideals and exchanged views as they addressed studentsโ€™ concerns and underlying issues within the academe.

Lumigon expressed that what drives student leaders is their determination despite differences, while Ramacula used his partyโ€™s name, Padayon, to emphasize the importance of continuing to strive toward success despite challenges.

Regarding the usage of artificial intelligence (AI) in the university, Ramacula stated that it is justifiable if used in moderation, while Lumigon also expressed that the use of AI is admissible.

Moreover, the Padayon presidential candidate emphasized the importance of following the student handbook, while the opposing presidential candidate from the Sakses Party suggested meeting halfway by supporting the welfare of students with limitations.

In regard to the upcoming elections, the event aimed to help students stay informed and cast their votes wisely toward leaders who demonstrate integrity, service, and excellence for the universityโ€™s development. | Report by Jeah Pajaron

The Sea Strivers officially unveils the full release of this yearโ€™s The Perspectives โ€” a platform where aspiring student leaders are challenged to speak with clarity, stand by their principles, and face the questions that demand more than rehearsed answers.

Beyond platforms and promises lies the true measure of leadership: integrity under pressure, sincerity in service, and the willingness to be accountable to the student body. In every response given, candidates revealed not only their plans for the university, but also the kind of leaders they aspire to become.

As the university community prepares to choose its next set of student leaders, may this serve as a reminder to listen beyond confidence, think beyond popularity, and vote with discernment.

The future of student leadership begins with an informed choice.

Your vote is crucial. Vote wisely!
