As the saying goes, “No plan survives first contact.”

And for most of us recreational runners, that’s 100% true. We may already have an entire 3-month training block planned out… then life happens.

So what do we do? Cry and abandon training? Nope, we adapt.

Sure, nothing can fully replace a complete training block, but unless we get paid to run, we simply have to work with what we have.

THE PLAN MAY NOT SURVIVE, BUT WE WILL.

HERE ARE SOME ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

Easy Run – No ego running. Run as slow as needed without sacrificing form. This is the bread and butter of long-distance running, especially for us casual runners.

Tempo Run – 5K total, including a 1K warm-up run and a 1K cooldown run. Never run cold, always warm up your muscles first.

Steady Long Run – This run is more pace-focused. The goal is to maintain a steady pace from start to finish and learn how to run consistently. It should start easy and gradually feel comfortably hard toward the end.

Example:
Monday - Easy Run
Tuesday - Rest
Wednesday - Tempo Run
Thursday - Rest
Friday - Rest
Saturday - Steady Long Run
Sunday - Rest

Do some strength training at least 1x a week (Leg or Core)
You could also do Pyometrics & Isometrics if you have free time. You can all do this even without equipment.

Most influencers say you don’t need motivation if you have strong discipline, but here’s why I think they’re wrong.

Most people who start their running or fitness journey struggle with staying disciplined. I know that because I used to be one of those people. For years, I kept falling in and out of fitness. Not until I realized this:

The reason I’ve been able to stick to my routine for 2+ years now isn’t because I suddenly became a highly disciplined person, far from it. It’s because I FOUND THE RIGHT MOTIVATION: My WIFE and KIDS.

That motivation kept me consistent day in and day out for more than 2 years. That doesn’t mean I ran every single day nonstop. Nope. I took rest days, sometimes even weeks, especially after big races. But that strong motivation always kept me coming back. And over time, I was able to build discipline.

Discipline doesn’t happen overnight. It’s built through routine and consistency. And to stay consistent, you need to find the right motivation. Not something like, “I’m gonna run so people know that I run.” Because what happens if you can’t run? What happens when life gets busy or the weather gets bad?

Pick something stronger. Something that lasts.

P.S. This was my first run in 9 days. I mostly played pickleball because of the bad weather.

Can't run? Walk.

Find a reason, not excuses.

Just keep moving.

Most running influencers say,
“DISCIPLINE is more important than MOTIVATION.”

The truth is,
THEY'RE WRONG.

Picture this:

You’ve been working for the same company for over 10 years.

You’re never late.
Never missed a deadline.
#1 in Sales.
Consistent Employee of the Month.

But one day, your boss tells you:

“You’re not getting promoted.”
Instead, they promote someone else.

Now ask yourself honestly:

Would you still show up with the same energy?
Would you still feel MOTIVATED to produce the same results?

PROBABLY NOT.

You've got the DISCIPLINE,
But you just lost your MOTIVATION

LET'S CHANGE THE POV:

YOU received the BIGGEST PROMOTION of your life.

6 FIGURES a month, working for only 1 YEAR.

BUT HERE’S THE THING:

You were always late.
Missed deadlines.
Barely performing.
Not even Top 10 in Sales.

You just happened to smooth-talk your boss into giving you the promotion.

And after getting promoted?
Nothing changed.

5 months later,
You're FIRED.

You got the MOTIVATION,
But still lacked DISCIPLINE.

Here’s the TRUTH about Motivation and Discipline:

You don't need to choose one over the other.
Because BOTH MATTER.

Lose your motivation,
and discipline slowly fades.

Avoid discipline,
And motivation becomes useless.

Motivation PUSHES you forward,
Discipline KEEPS you on the right path.

That's the same thing with running,

What you need is to find a LONG-TERM MOTIVATION

“For my kids.”
“For my health.”
“For the people I love.”

or anything that can KEEP you GOING,

and then WORK on your DISCIPLINE

"Train properly"
"Rest & Recover on time."
"Keep your nutrition in check."

so that YOU can CONTINUE RUNNING for a LONG TIME.

The real question is:

What keeps you motivated to stay disciplined?

Do Base Training Really Work? Part 1

I'm currently doing the 2nd phase of my base training plan before starting my Sub 21 5K Training plan next month.

TLDR:
So far, not so good. I wasn't able to do my weekly long run, and fell short with my target tempo run. There's a very slight improvement in the HR tho, which isn't very noticeable, yet. I'm also doing some pickleball, will this help me reach my target or is it just a useless distraction? Only time will tell. This is just the 1st week, a lot of things may still happen.
