Nearly 150 aspiring student-athletes filled the court of Athens Academy on April 10 as fresh faces gathered for this yearโ€™s varsity basketball tryouts, each determined to earn a place on the school roster. By 6 a.m., Coach Kevin Shin observed the players as they warmed up and prepared to showcase their skills.

The tryouts began with a prayer, bringing both senior high and junior high players together before they were divided onto opposite sides of the court for warm-ups and scrimmages. As the games unfolded, Coach Kevin carefully watched each athleteโ€™s ball movement, teamwork, defense, and court communication.

Several players stood out during the scrimmages. In the senior high division, Julian used his height well to control rebounds, while Clorado impressed with a strong three-point basket in the second game. Dianela also caught attention with his smooth and effortless shooting form, displaying calm and accurate finishing on the court. In the junior high division, Abad showed that size is no obstacle with his energetic performance, Salvador made an impressive final shot, and Beconia also delivered a notable showing on the court.

While the small division starts, it is guided by Robles, one of the players, under the supervision of Coach Kevin. After the session, players were informed that accepted applicants would be contacted after evaluations, followed by interviews with selected junior high and senior high players, along with Coach Kevin, about the upcoming season.

During the post-tryout interviews, four student-athletes shared their thoughts on what it takes to become a strong varsity player, the areas they want to improve in their game, and their goals for the upcoming season.

For 15-year-old JM Sorio, a good athlete is someone who has focus, proper time management, and respect for both teammates and coaches. He shared that he wants to improve his defensive skills and better understand team systems in order to play more safely and effectively on the court. Looking ahead, JM hopes to help the team become champions and earn a place in the Palarong Pambansa.

James Koby, also 15, believes that daily practice, sportsmanship, and consistency are the most important qualities of a good athlete. He said he aims to strengthen both his defense and offense, knowing that improving these areas will help him perform better against stronger opponents. This season, James is looking forward to defeating the defending champions and helping the team qualify for NCR-level competition.

Thirteen-year-old Prince Ocampo shared that discipline and constant training are what make a player truly stand out. He wants to improve his defense, offense, and communication inside the court to become a more reliable teammate. When asked what he looks forward to most, Prince gave a lighthearted answer by joking that โ€œpogi ni coach,โ€ bringing laughter to the interview while showing his cheerful spirit.

For Zuriel Calvin, also 13, being hardworking and committed to regular training are key qualities of a good athlete. He said he wants to improve communication on the court, especially on defense, to build stronger teamwork during games. Zuriel is hoping for more training sessions in the future so that the team will be fully prepared and ready for upcoming matches.

With strong turnout, promising talent, and determined young athletes showing heart on the court, this yearโ€™s tryouts proved that Athens Academyโ€™s basketball program has a bright and competitive season ahead. As players await the final roster, the road to the new season has officially begun.

SNCS B placed third, showing strong defensive effort and persistence throughout their matches.

In Field #3, emerging teams stepped onto the court eager to prove their potential. Athens C rose to the challenge and secured first place, showing that dedication and teamwork can lead to impressive results. The Black Team, composed of players from SNCS and other schools, finished second after displaying aggressive gameplay and quick adaptation during matches. BPS placed third with steady and consistent performances on the court.

Throughout the tournament, what stood out most was the determination of the players. Every team fought hard for each possession, whether through tight defensive plays, quick transitions, or carefully aimed shots. The intensity of the games reflected the playersโ€™ passion and commitment to the sport.

For Patad, one of the participating players, the tournament was a meaningful experience. He shared that it was rewarding to see how much his team had improved, especially in terms of teamwork and coordination.

With deep sadness, we mourn the passing of our beloved former principal, Casilda O. Baterna, who faithfully served Athens Academy for 12 years.
Throughout the years of faithful leadership, Madam Baterna guided our school with wisdom, integrity, and a genuine love for students, teachers, and staff. During her years of leadership, she made a meaningful and lasting contribution to our school community, especially in English proficiency and in strengthening Christian formation. Many lives were shaped โ€“ not only through academic excellence but through values formation as well.
Many of us remember her not just as a principal, but as a mentor, a servant leader, a model of professionalism, and a steady presence who believed deeply in the mission of education. The seeds of dedication and vision planted during her time continue to flourish in the lives of the students and educators who were privileged to learn and serve under her leadership.
While we mourn this loss, we also celebrate a life well-lived and a legacy that will remain part of the very foundation of our school.
As a community, we extend our heartfelt prayers and deepest sympathies to the bereaved family. May they find comfort in the many lives touched and inspired by Madam Baterna.
Thank you for your service, Madam, your leadership, and your heart for this school. You will always be remembered.

It's HERSTORY, this International Women's Month, we commemorate WOMEN.

For centuries, oppression among women was ubiquitous; the origins of women's oppression predate the development of class society, and the subordination of women was instrumental in the development of early forms of class societies and the directions they took. In much of the written literature of the ancient and medieval world, we have evidence of women's oppression by men in Middle Eastern, African, Asian, and European cultures. Women did not have the same legal and political rights as men and were under the control of fathers and husbands in almost all societies. In some psychological views, the oppression of women is an outcome of the more truculent and competitive nature of males due to testosterone levels. Others attribute it to a self-reinforcing cycle where patriarchs compete for power and control.

Psychological views are used to justify the idea that women think differently or less well than men, though such studies don't hold up to scrutiny. Because it only depends on the person, not on gender or s*x.

As we progress, our minds become more open-minded and have come to embrace who we are.

Today, women have political and legal rights as our society slowly awakens and gives honour to celebrate the natural matriarch of our homes.

Women give life to gain, and it is admirable how one life can alter the world in little ways. We see women dominating fields that were once only a dream for a woman who lived in the eras where she could not speak nor achieve whatever her soul yearns for. But, in the present era; I can be in a male-dominated field and break gender roles.
