Nearly 150 aspiring student-athletes filled the court of Athens Academy on April 10 as fresh faces gathered for this yearโs varsity basketball tryouts, each determined to earn a place on the school roster. By 6 a.m., Coach Kevin Shin observed the players as they warmed up and prepared to showcase their skills.
The tryouts began with a prayer, bringing both senior high and junior high players together before they were divided onto opposite sides of the court for warm-ups and scrimmages. As the games unfolded, Coach Kevin carefully watched each athleteโs ball movement, teamwork, defense, and court communication.
Several players stood out during the scrimmages. In the senior high division, Julian used his height well to control rebounds, while Clorado impressed with a strong three-point basket in the second game. Dianela also caught attention with his smooth and effortless shooting form, displaying calm and accurate finishing on the court. In the junior high division, Abad showed that size is no obstacle with his energetic performance, Salvador made an impressive final shot, and Beconia also delivered a notable showing on the court.
While the small division starts, it is guided by Robles, one of the players, under the supervision of Coach Kevin. After the session, players were informed that accepted applicants would be contacted after evaluations, followed by interviews with selected junior high and senior high players, along with Coach Kevin, about the upcoming season.
During the post-tryout interviews, four student-athletes shared their thoughts on what it takes to become a strong varsity player, the areas they want to improve in their game, and their goals for the upcoming season.
For 15-year-old JM Sorio, a good athlete is someone who has focus, proper time management, and respect for both teammates and coaches. He shared that he wants to improve his defensive skills and better understand team systems in order to play more safely and effectively on the court. Looking ahead, JM hopes to help the team become champions and earn a place in the Palarong Pambansa.
James Koby, also 15, believes that daily practice, sportsmanship, and consistency are the most important qualities of a good athlete. He said he aims to strengthen both his defense and offense, knowing that improving these areas will help him perform better against stronger opponents. This season, James is looking forward to defeating the defending champions and helping the team qualify for NCR-level competition.
Thirteen-year-old Prince Ocampo shared that discipline and constant training are what make a player truly stand out. He wants to improve his defense, offense, and communication inside the court to become a more reliable teammate. When asked what he looks forward to most, Prince gave a lighthearted answer by joking that โpogi ni coach,โ bringing laughter to the interview while showing his cheerful spirit.
For Zuriel Calvin, also 13, being hardworking and committed to regular training are key qualities of a good athlete. He said he wants to improve communication on the court, especially on defense, to build stronger teamwork during games. Zuriel is hoping for more training sessions in the future so that the team will be fully prepared and ready for upcoming matches.
With strong turnout, promising talent, and determined young athletes showing heart on the court, this yearโs tryouts proved that Athens Academyโs basketball program has a bright and competitive season ahead. As players await the final roster, the road to the new season has officially begun.
