Mt. Pinatubo Blocked: Aetas Demand Justice
Today, the Aeta communities have taken a firm stand — blocking access to Mt. Pinatubo in protest. And they are absolutely right to do so.
For generations, the Aetas have called this land home. They protected it, nurtured it, and lived in harmony with it long before it became a tourist attraction. Yet now, decisions about their ancestral land are being made without them — and worse, they’re being excluded from the benefits.
Local government units (LGUs) have recently imposed new fees on tourists, supposedly for environmental and cultural preservation. But where is the transparency? Where is the respect for the rightful stewards of the land?
The Aetas deserve more than token inclusion — they should be the FIRST to benefit.
They should lead the conversation on tourism development. They should be the ones setting the rules, receiving the revenues, and shaping how their home is shared with the world.
This protest isn't just about money — it's about dignity, rights, and recognition. The Aetas are not outsiders to Mt. Pinatubo. They are Mt. Pinatubo.
