A Caesar salad is a popular green salad featuring crisp romaine lettuce, crunchy croutons, and shaved Parmesan cheese, all tossed in a rich, creamy, and tangy dressing. It typically includes ingredients like olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, egg, Worcestershire sauce, and anchovies.
History and Origin
Despite its name, the Caesar salad is not named after the Roman emperor Julius Caesar. It was invented on July 4, 1924, by Caesar Cardini, an Italian-American restaurateur.
The Birthplace: It was created at his restaurant, Caesar's, in Tijuana, Mexico, when an unexpected rush of American tourists overwhelmed the kitchen, forcing Cardini to improvise with the few ingredients he had left.
The Original Recipe: Originally, the salad was prepared tableside. The authentic version featured whole romaine lettuce leaves meant to be picked up by the stem and eaten with your hands.
